400' r8 direct from Kodak?

Post by retrogrouch »

I was looking at e-bay ( dammit), And I noticed that one seller stated that you could buy 400 foot rolls of regular 8 direct from kodak. I have always bought my super 8 from them, and loved the price. Has anyone done/heard of this? I would be stoked if this is the case, but fear more Internet BS. Would you need to just a 16mm bulk loader, or could you do it by hand? Is there another company that sells cheap bulk loads?

Thanks for lookin'

Rg,

Here in Toronto, LIFT recently made the required minimum 6000ft order from Kodak Canada for both Regular 8mm Plus-X and E100d respectively.

http://lift.ca/equipment/store

The LIFT store only displays the 25 ft lengths but they have on occasion spooled down 100ft lengths for my Bolex UltraPan8 camera. Give them call or send an email with your requests ->

http://lift.ca/contact/Equipment_Rentals_and_Store

As per their website, i.e.

"Special orders of film materials not listed here are by arrangement with the technical coordinators, if it's available we can source it for you."

Cheers!

You can buy R8 film direct from Kodak, but the minimum order quantity is a little more than 400'. For E100D, the minimum purchase is 20 400' rolls, at a cost of $141.92 each. For Tri-X reversal, the minimum purchase is 5 400' rolls, at a cost of $86.69 each. Both of these are "finish-to-order" and can take up to 3 weeks to be delivered.

$9 bucks for a 25 foot roll? Is there any body out there who can lend me $2800? Has any one on this sight tried to organize a bulk purchase? If LIFT is selling film for 17.5 , including a $2 dollar deposit on the cans, that's pretty resonable.

You are overestimating the number of readers here. Check the nr of views on this topic.

In the past there was one Australian guy (Francis something) who promised to do a bulk purchase from Kodak. He took the money of a number of people and never delivered. Neither refunded the money.

Others started the idea but never came to anything. I am glad I didn't buy a truck load of Fomapan R100 in S8. People have a lot of intentions but at the moment suprème they remember of something (like the mrs at home) which keeps them from going through. I just bought my rolls from FotoImpex and a friend brought a stack from Prague :)
Kind regards,

André

I did a price breakdown, and a 100foot roll from International film is $42 =168 for 400+ 4 spools and boxes. Cheap shipping too. $ 10.50 for a 25 footer. Hard to beat that....

John's a good guy and he's doing it for the love of the format obviously... not to really make big money.

If you think about it, even if you bought those rolls it would still be nice to pay someone to do the spool downs and supply the reels and cans so John takes care of all of that inexpensively.

You won't end up with 4 true 25' reels. There's a few extra feet on each 25' reel so you can flip it over in daylight. You get the same extra amount on a 100' reel as you get on a 25' reel so you will end up with three 25' reels and one short reel. I have done this with a 100' reel and you do end up paying a little less even if you figure you are getting 3 usable 25' reels. John Schwind charges $42 for a 100' reel. If you divide that by 3 you are paying $14 per 25' reel where you would normally pay $16. Plus you end up with a short reel but I'm not sure how long it is.

The way I cut down the 100' reel was to load it into a Bolex H8 and run it to 27' on the cameras meter onto a 25' spool and cut it. The way I figured out how much to put on each reel was by running a reel that I found in an old camera and noting how many feet were on the cameras meter when it ran out. I did all the loading in a film changing bag then took the camera out to watch the meter.

I agree with the supporting the cottage industries. I have also heard that you have to be careful when re spooling, because static might leave marks on your film. In any case, I'm happy to do business with John. ( I would love it if he would take pay pal, even at a small fee increase...)

Cheers everbody,

John Schwind takes paypal for film purchases. Contact him with your order and he will send a paypal invoice or send funds via paypal to <buy8mmfilm@operamail.com> or <jaschwind@operamail.com>

When loading from 100' spools to 25 ft spools your best bet is to load the spool to very top. You will get three spools with close to 33ft. each. The problem with 100D is that it is thicker(the base material) and will fill up a 25 spool with less than 33ft. Another option is to fill the 25ft spool to about 1/4 inch from the top by feel. This should give 4 25ft spools.

This has been stated here before. There is someone who posts under the name mr8mm. He is John Schwind.
Contact him and deal with him instead of dealing with unknown entities.
He'll help you. He posted something to this effect days and days ago, and here you are searching eBay for this :)

HUH! Yes! Francis something, the Australian mate who skipped town loooooooooooooool after taking the money.
I do not blame him, I blame the poor wretched souls who fell for his inflated claims.
Everything about him raised a red flag and I would have never trusted him with one penny. He promised the sky and everything about him reeked of lies. And yet, people sent him their money.
No wonder the spam kings of email and viagra make lots of money. There are people who will hand their money to anyone just because they want to believe in anything.

Really? I guess that 230 other people must of missed that one as well. I read about the direct from Kodak on ebay, in a listing for a P1 camera[/u]. I would love to buy Cameras from John, but I don't think that he is in the business. I was the one who pointed out John's business, and great prices. I found the posts from " days and days ago" , after sorting through all John's posts. I understand now why John's website says " send check or money order". I admit that I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but it seems that you have spent some time in the dishwasher yourself.

What are you talking about? I recommended that you deal with John Schwind. And your response is a spiel that truly does not make any sense to me.
