Idea for the Ulta Pan Boys

Post by retrogrouch »

I was pondering how UP would affect depth of field, when I had an Idea, Spured on by another member. If you are going to to do a big re-tool of a camera, to increase it's native functions, why not steal a page from the HDV play book, and build in a depth of field adapter into the camera format. With a high qualitly ground glass, you would only loose around .5f, and you could get stellar depth of field, and a massive choice of cheap lens options. ( Super taks or the under rated and dirt cheap Hexanons)
If you like this Idea, my fee will be
1. the option to buy a production camera at cost.
2. The native Ground glass adapter be called "the grouch"

Cheers,

Hi Retro.

As per my previous UP8 postings detailing the conversion process towards a hybrid UP8 camera...there is no major re-tooling involved with the exception of the milling of the H8 gate. The UP8 implementation makes extensive use of the interchangeability of the Bolex H8/16 manufacturing design.

I am not convinced of embedding a DOF type of adapter effect into groundglass. Note that DOF increases natively as one moves downward through the different film/video focal lengths, i.e. 65m -> 35mm-> 16mm -> UP8-> S8/R8 -> 1/4 in sensor.

If classic 4 perf 35mm academy DOF effect is desired then I would advise UP8 DOF manipulation via the numerous C-Mount <-> 16mm/35mm adapters, e.g. Canon, Nikon, Leica, PL, BNCR, etc. The magnification increase from utilizing the optical center produces a slight telephoto effect as per focal length used, i.e. DOF decreases with increased focal length. , i.e. 18mm -> 21mm -> 50mm -> 75mm -> 150mm and so on.

Cheers!
