Super 8 by a 5 Year Old

Post by Will2 »

I've been handing Canon AF310xl's to by 5 year old and 8 year old during vacations and letting them shoot a couple rolls to get their perspective on the trip. It tends to be about 90% unusable but they really have a fun time with it; much more than video for some reason.

I cut together a short that incorporates some of that footage from a trip this year. Let me know what you think; I'm afraid it's a little too artsy but hopefully it captures some emotion and fun of the trip.

Why does the Galveston beach actually look better in your footage than the last time I was there :D
This is excellent. I loved the scene on the bridge and your kid running around with a Super8 camera around his neck. Very very nice!

Nice stuff. I bet the 5-year old likes the Super 8 better because he can feel that it's important -- everyone knows you can shoot as much video as you want but when you shoot film, its finite nature makes it matter what you do.

It's funny to see this open with a DSLR image. It looks perfectly clearn and fine, but the S8 image, to me, is more lively.

How did you like Final cut X? I've got an old pre-intel mac that won't run anything newer than '09, and the pro community is all talking about switching to Adobe Premiere....

Final Cut Pro X is a strange beast. I use the previous version everyday in my work so of course I'm very used that that one.

Some aspects are really great, like the magnetic timeline can be useful once you understand it. Some parts are strange; like generally how it handles media and how audio syncs up and stays together even when I didn't want it to. I'm sure there are simple solutions to all my issues but they are not easily evident to someone who is used to the old version.

The rendering is better and faster in general.

I'm reserving judgement until I do a few more projects with it.

That's the funny part, everyone told us that Galveston was a really nasty beach, and maybe it is close to the city, but down on the southern tip of the island it was amazing. Maybe three families on the beach for a mile in either direction and they sweep the beach everyday. The sand was as nice as South Carolina and 1/100th as crowded. We stayed at a place called Pointe West and had a great time...very little development down there.

I explained to the kids that they shouldn't let the camera run very long and they started shooting one second intervals so it made for some strange footage. Sometimes that stuff is really priceless though.

Cool! Wow! That is a good camera for kids! Have your boys shot any more with it?

I gave my little boy a Canon AF 310 XL too and this is the first film he made with it...
