CineCap Velocity Pulldown blur

Post by wreels »

Hello all, I’m a first time poster but I’ve been a lurker here for years. I bought the Velocity Box two years ago but I’m just now setting it up. I sent my issue below to Roger Evans but I think he may be busy because he hasn’t replied back yet. So, rather than add to his stress, I decided to post here to see if anyone has had a similar issue.

Description of the problem:
I'm getting pulldown blur as describe at the bottom of the CineCap Velocity setup page: http://www.moviestuff.tv/set_up_velocity.html As instructed, with the Workprinter and Velocity Box setup, I've tried MANY different Manual sync settings and some settings obviously work better than others. However, the major problem that I'm having is that when I do the pull down, one section looks great and other sections gets the pulldown blur. So I’ve tweaked the manual sync many times and the section of film that looked good before received the blur and the section that had blur before, now looked fine. I can't seem to find that sweet spot for the manual sync settings. Here is what I have setup. I'm hoping you can help me get through this, as I’m already 3 days behind in my project.

My Setup:

Hardware:
1. Workprinter XP with Velocity Box and a Canopus ADVC-110 connect by the 6 pin firewire cable to my XP PC. The Canopus is also using the 5V/2A power supply.
2. The camera is a Canon GL2. Svideo connected to the Canopus
3. Capturing the AVI to a Raid0 configuration. (Two 7200 RMP drives)
4. I followed the instructions from http://www.moviestuff.tv/set_up_velocity_box.html . The instant the advance claw reaches the bottom of the pulldown cycle the Velocity Box’s red light comes on.

Software:
5. Latest version of CineCap Velocity.
6. CineCap Velocity Settings:
• MovieStuff Unit: Workprinter + Velocity Box
• Manual Sync (tried MANY different settings ranging from, .10, .20, .30, .47, .48, .49, .50, .51, .52, .55, .60, .70, .80, .90, etc.) With each of these taking 25 minutes to process the same 200’ Super 8 reel footage and getting bad results (although some better than others) I’ve become a bit discouraged…
• SD Video Compression is set to MainConcept DV Codec 2.4.16
• MainConcept Encoder is Clamb YUV to ITU601r
• Video standard is NTSC and SD pulldown is Blended Frames
• 200’ Reel being process with MainConcept at 18fps.

I really hope someone can help.

God bless,

For anyone who's interested, Roger had me do the following and it worked.

1. Change the shutter speed on my Canon GL2 to 1/250.
2. Uncheck Manual Sync
3. Set the Movie Stuff Unit field to Sniper-Pro / QuickSilver-FX
4. Recapture and process my footage.

That did the trick.

I had a similar problem with my WorkPrinter XP and Velocity Box when I first got the Velocity Box. I already had my shutter at 1/250, and I was using the V-Box + Workprinter setting in Cinecap Velocity.

When I tried small offsets of the manual sync like you did ( .10, .20, .30, .47, .48, .49, .50) it also did not work. It wasn't until I increased the offset to a large number (5.00, also on Roger's advice) that it worked.

My setup:

WorkPrinter XP
Velocity Box
Cinecap Velocity 1.3.0
Standalone SATA 11 hard drive.
Sony DXC950
Somethin Xtra's DXC Camera Control Software V2.01
(Control Pedestal, Detail, Gain, Red Gain, Blue Gain, Iris, Zoom, Focus from PC)

I had a similar problem with the synch adjustment in Velocity.

With my Workprinter, a Canon HV-40 and Velocity Box, I made a manual software adjustment to "-5.30" and ALL pulldown blur disappeared throughout the capture file.

When I tried lower adjustments, the beginning of the capture would look fine, but pulldown blur would start to appear toward the end of the capture file.
