Going digital for all intents and purposes...

Re: Going digital for all intents and purposes...
I look at film as an artistic choice in a varied palette. Artists may feel like using watercolor at times and acrylic at other times. Various paints have their own look and purposes. Sometimes a flair pen will be used for quick drawings.
In this analogy, digital cameras may be used to document house repairs in progress for the insurance company while a film camera would be used to document a beautiful and colorful Indian Pow Wow.
So, hold onto some of your cameras in order to maintain a varied artist's palette.

I should add that I think it was Super8man's website which prompted me to start filming again after my 5 year hiatus

The government says that by 2010 30% of us will be fat....I am merely a trendsetter

Have you thought about using something like SquareSpace? It's really easy to use and easy to edit plus you can add social widget thingys without coding.

If you only film your kids in video you will regret it some day. Film is beautiful and archival, but you know that already. I sacrificed whatever it took to shoot film of my kids and family when I didn't have two nickels to rub together. By far, the best thing I ever spent money on.

Re: Going digital for all intents and purposes...
No doubt film is great. But after going through my parent's house and literally tossing photos and negatives into the dumpster, at some point you realize you can't take it with you nor can you store it all for some unknown future relative who might look at it. Don't worry though, we saved the good stuff! But yeah, shoot film of the important stuff...but also make a point of digitizing it so that you can share it immediately. Live for today.
Cheers,
Mike

Re: Going digital for all intents and purposes...
Mike valid points, but since you mentioned you had kids is why I commented. I shot film because of them. Sure after I'm gone they will probably toss all the pictures of vacations and whatnot, but you can bet they will not be tossing the films that are the story of their lives growing up. I tend to think that home movies are more for the future than the immediate. It's real value is as a kinda time machine. This weekend I will be showing my family a film I just completed transferring to DV and edited with music and titles. I shot this film in 1984 of our family picnic and the occasion of the showing is a celebration of my parents 65th wedding anniversary. I shot this footage more like a test of a camera and some techniques as I was learning cinematography and no one but me has seen the footage before. The footage today has so much more impact and importance than it did when I first shot it. I hope you do shoot some of the important stuff on film. It will be there for you when you get to be my age.

Dear Super8man,
As a new dad, I understand your point of view. When I have to find a new belt for the elmo, get a jammed cart, or explain to my wife why $10 a minute is better than free, I ask myself, why do I do this? I do it because I love it, and I credit you with being the person who has guided me and inspired me the most. There are many great people on this site, and the other one, with an increadable depth of knowledge, but you are one of the few who's posts I take as cannon. ' keep it fun and cheap' has kept me going to my local thrift stores, checking my 'trap line' for deals. After years of agonizing, I finally bought my first non-flea market camera, a H8 rex, based on flowers in mums garden.
thanks Mike

Re: Going digital for all intents and purposes...
Those are very nice comments you made. Thanks. Sadly, we just sold my Mum's house and they are both in assisted living apartments. Life is good for them, in a manner of speaking. Interestingly, the island garden has overgrown to almost be unrecognizable from when she tended it. And yes, the capturing of her garden on film, not digital, is a wonderful thing in my mind too. I am glad we have those films of my kids on the island as toddlers. Great great stuff. So yes, to be clear, I plan to continue shooting 8mm filmstock when I can. My H8Rx is not going anywhere...nor is my Canon S90. That has captured so many great moments on both video and still that I can't sing its praises highly enough.
So keep on shooting and sharing movies in any format. I plan to start putting more of my films snd photos up on flickr. Here's the link:

Michael,
I thought I also should mention this: Your website was a huge inspiration when I first got into Super8 10-15 years ago. I read your site page for page and enjoyed every bit of it.
Thanks for all the hard work you put into it!
Best,
Andreas

Re: Going digital for all intents and purposes...
Good points about future generations and the film; I hope to make the Super 8 and 16mm films I've shot be considered "family jewels" (insert joke here) and be taken care of but you never know. Part of that will be making sure I have good transfers into a digital form and many backups including keeping a data DVD or memory stick with each box of film.

I must admit, if you're going digital, them Canons are the way to go...it's the 35mm depth of field, isn't it? They seem to actually somehow produce better looking footage than the high-end HD cams....super8man wrote:...I have to admit, my Canon S90 is doing all my work in both still and movie these days.

Re: Going digital for all intents and purposes...
I don't have a DSLR camera yet but I'm seriously thinking about going with a Micro 4/3. That way I can use some of my old cine lenses with an adapter. Has anyone had any experience with these yet?
