Ektachrome 100D with a Bolex camera
I just got back a roll of Standard 8mm film that I shot last week on a Bolex P4. I am quite impressed with the results with this camera. The Pan Cinor lens did a great job of capturing the sharpness of 100D. I hadn't shot any 100D in Standard 8 so decided to do so. I purchased the Bolex P4 on Ebay and lubed/cleaned it myself. The light meter is working so I decided to try the PX1 1.5 volt replacement batteries, and this camera takes 2. The voltage is high so compensation was a must. Here's what I did I took my Minolta Autopak 8 D6 and used that has a reference in setting the Automatic ASA dial on the Bolex. To get the correct exposure I needed to reduce the ASA on the Bolex from 100 to just past 50ASA. At this setting the Fstops matched that of the Minolta. The end result was in worked perfectly. I had calibrated the Minolta to slightly overexpose and this worked in my benefit when adjusting the Bolex. The slight overexposure was what it needed to look good on film. Projected the standard 8 film I shot is perfect in sharpness and steadiness. I actually believe I like the end results better with standard 8 than with Super 8. The steadiness is rock solid. The Bolex P4 was the last in a series of cameras Bolex produced around 1964 and 65. The S1 was a slightly less expensive camera but looks similair to the P4. The P4 has the better optics plus it uses a coincident image rangefinder that is a joy to use. Talk about an easy way to get the perfect focus at any range. So for anyone wanting to shoot some standard 8 with the 100D grab a Bolex or any high quality camera and give it a try, you won't be disappointed. Projection is all I do and the colors just pop so I can't say what the film will look like with a telecine. For me projection gives the best and most natural results with 100D.

Question for anyone wanting to answer it. If I use the variable shutter 1/2 closed under bright conditions how much should I open the fstops. Let's say the camera says f16 with the variable shutter half closed, should I open it up from there to F11? Or would it fall somewhere between F16 and F11? Thanks. I haven't needed to use the variable shutter but I made need to when I shoot some film at the beach next month.

Any chance we can see this footage? I have a P1 but have only run a roll of B&W through it.

I didn't have this footage transferred to digital so putting something up here would be difficult. Thanks for asking though.beamascope wrote:Any chance we can see this footage? I have a P1 but have only run a roll of B&W through it.
