Just a regular multimeter. Some are available for about $10-$15 at WalMart or Radio Shack.

Dud bulb reads 25v, 1A around the base. The filament has gone. This is as you said exactly the voltage of the Moviscop bulb. However that bulb only glows red in the Muray.

Multimeter

The multimeter reads 31.0 volts AC from the Muray bulb holder.

Tried an amp reading [2000 microamp setting] and all hell broke loose - the subsidiary lamp came on, the multimeter needles started sparking and I smelt burning. I checked the meter afterwards, no damage apparent. No burning smell in the Muray either. The meter reading was erratic, could not get any sense out of the amp setting reading at all.

I must stress that I have zero experience of electronics = '0'.

Any thoughts on the voltage reading please?

Thanks,

Ric

Voltage reading of 31 VAC seems too high. This would blow bulbs very fast.
Amps would have to be measured inserted in series with the circuit and on a scale superior to 1A. 2000 microamps in inferior to 1A.
Besides there is no need to measure amps in this case.
Still can't figure out why your bulb only glows dimly.
Maybe you can ask around among your friends who has some experience in electricity.

Cheers,

Well presumably this explains the blown original 25v bulb?

That is ok by me ;)

I'm afraid this brings me round to 'zero' again. I may pop out and see if I can get hold of a 30v, 1amp bulb somewhere, just out of curiousity?

Thanks again,

Surely - London UK :)

I have a store called Halfords nearby which specialises in bulbs for all manner of bikes and cars, perhaps I will find something there: something must fit this viewer! :o

Think I worked out why the 25v bulb only glowed red, the Muray had a switch on it which would cut out the main light on raising the front cowling. When I inspected the viewer I found a loose piece of metal under the cowling which has snapped off. This was obviously the connection-maker/breaker. So the Muray is now on permanent stand-by mode and I have no idea how to resolve that.

It might be simpler to replace the current lamp holder with another one, then I can just run a separate lead to it. Any suggestions please - it will need to be a small bright bulb that I can find a socket for, and can run a lead to the mains or a mains converter perhaps?

Thanks,

Ric

31 volts measured on an open socket (i.e. with no working bulb in place) is what is known as "open circuit voltage" and would not necessarily be incorrect. It would drop when loaded with a bulb. I suggest you look for a 24v 24 watt bulb with the right base, put that in and then measure the voltage across the base when the bulb is in situ. That will give a better clue as to what is happening.
I can't make a definite diagnosis as I do not personally know this machine, but information like that may help at a distance.
I live in Devon, but if the worst comes to the worst, if you can get the machine to me I'm happy to see if I can help on a no charge (except for parts and return cost) basis.

That's very kind of you Granfer! :)

I picked myself up a DIY halogen bulb kit this afternoon which may get me out of the 'no functional 16mm editor' woods.

Will pdate ;)

Hi,

The story so far. After another futile attempt to acquire a Moviscop I decided to customise a pair of Moviscop rewind arms with the Muray. This meant fitting a 12v halogen lamp to the viewer and running a wire to it. This took some thought and experimentation but eventually the extra wires fit quite snugly under the removable hood. The bulb also needed a small transformer to run from the mains (red object, rear left hand side). I secured everything to a charity shop coffee table top from which I had removed the legs. The object lying over the transformer is a hinged arm which allows me to rewind film over the viewer. I also needed to fit some card around the monitor to screen out light from the bulb - whatever bulb used there would be unwanted light leakage by the viewer's very design

Image

The result is not perfect and the custom halogen produces a 'hot spot' in the lower right of the monitor - reason unknown - but at least I can see my footage now! :)

Bests,

Ric
