Muray 16mm Viewer help please :-o

Hi,

Just threaded up my very first 50' 16mm test film in the viewer and found the framer is askew.

The roller with the teeth has a knurled knob which might be the framer. It is tight though. The focus knob at the front has two smaller knobs either side which seem to fine adjust the framer, but they are either tight or loose - either having little effect - and I still can't get frames square in the viewer.



The viewer needs a new bulb, hence the angle lamp.

Help with the framer appreciated!

Before the image reaches the screen, it has to reflected off up to three little mirrors each one of which is adjustable. You'll have to look underneath the viewer and experiment with adjusting the mirrors until the image is straight.

But when I said 'straight' I meant 'square' in the viewfinder. At the moment I'm getting the 'split screen' effect which suggests the framer is out of synch with the film



How can I correct this please?

That's easy. Just loosen the knurled knob where the sprocket is and move the sprocket back and forth until you have the frame line where you want it, then re-tighten.

This knob, which way loosens it and which way tightens it please? My one is rock solid but I am hoping that WD40 might shift it. Are you sure there is no lock on it though?

Btw, the framer is ok, I was trying to view double perf Regular 8 footage so the frames are 50% out of sync - no worry, but I would like to have some control over the framer for the future, of course.

I just removed the bulb from the Moviscop and fitted it to the Muray. Nothing would work till I put in the secondary lamp, then both lights came on. However, the Moviscop bulb element only glowed red. I left it for a while thinking it was warming up but it just stayed dull red. I put it back in the Moviscop and it came on brightly as usual.

I don't know anything about electronics but that would suggest to me that the Muray takes a slightly different voltage lamp, what do you think please?

I disassembled the Moviscop magnifying glass beneath the bulb - cleaned the glass - and lightly cleaned inside the film gate with some compressed air. But on reassembly I am still getting the same misty image in the viewer. The Muray image is crystal clear like a tv set. All I need now is the correct illumination.

Previously I had cleaned the mirrors inside the Moviscop, which were filthy, but there must be additional optics covered in grime somewhere which I just cannot see to access?

Strange.

I haven't had a Muray in front of me for years, but the specs for the lamp are available from different sources on the internet.

You would have to check the voltage at the lamp socket. It should be close to 25V.

Maybe this is a different model than the usual Muray?

For the Moviscop, you probably need to clean the prism which requires disassembly of the mechanism to do a proper job.

Like I said, the Moviscop bulb should normally work in the Muray.

Maybe it was modified to take the 6V 10W bulbs from the super8 viewers. That's why when you put the 25v bulb in, it just glows a little bit. Again, if you can measure the voltage at the socket, you'll have a better idea what's happening.
