CANON 1014 XL-S Wide Lens + Batteries

Hi my names Adam (although im choosing to use the name sk8 ) and have recently signed up to this forum. Lots of great info!

I will be receiving a CANON 1014 XL-S this week (my first s8 camera! i skipped digital all together)

I would like to know if it is possible to use another make/model Wide Attachment Lens or do i have to track down the original Canon lens?

Also what batteries do you use in your 1014xl-s or 814xl-s?

Disposable Alkaline would get rather expensive and id rather use Rechargeable if possible...what would be best NiCd, NiMH or Lithium-ion?

I know there was a 9v Battery Pack available at one time...is it possible to use another make/model and if using AA rechargeable batteries that only add up to 7.2v is this going to be a problem?

would be nice if we could have a 'sticky' thread for certain cameras with various tips, info etc...would save on all these 1014xls threads;)

disposable AA batteries are not expensive at all, since youll be able to shoot several cartridges with one set.. I shoot at least 10 carts with a 814e..

Compared to the costs of the film+developing its nothing.

I've been using Nimh batteries in my 1014XL-S for more than a year now without problems (that I know of :oops: ).

The problem w/ rechargables is of course the voltage rating. That being said you could build and external battery pack of Li-Ions and use an extra battery so the voltage would be 8.4v which would be close enough. Even so those cameras were rated at 10 carts silent when they were built 20 years ago. While S8 camera technology has stagnated, alikaline battery tech certainly has not. I'd be willing to bet that moderen disposable alkialines or Li-Ion batterys will easly run 15+ carts. Someday I might put a Kaceema in a camera and run it through several times to test this theory.

As to the wide attachement, you'll rarely need it. I have one and virtually never use it. You can use any attachment that you can thread onto the lens. The cannon attachement is great. I have it and use it on my Elmo super series camera. You can also use anamorphic lenses.

Congrats on the purchase of a great camera and having the incredible wisdom and forsight not to fall into the digital trap!

James E so you use the Wide Angle Lens on your Elmo but not the Canon..? have you used the Tele Converter before?

Hi, imo, stick with the canon w/a 67 lens, it was designed for your camera, all you'll need to do is swing the lens into macro mode and providing the lens is f4 or smaller ( f5.6, 8 etc ) they'll be no focus issues. Using a third parties lens may require more critical focussing adjustment.

There was a battery pack available for the 1014xl-s...it was designed to be used when shooting on location in colder temperatures (the battery pack had a long lead so the pack/batteries could be kept in a jacket pocket to keep temperature of batteries within acceptable limits/performance.
If your planning filming trips to the north pole I would advise searching out the pack
(It would be extremely easy to make one your self from parts available at Maplins).

I use one of those cheap variable voltage power adapters to power the camera when shooting indoors...this saves on battery use...just make sure you set the polarity of the adapter correctly before conecting to your precious camera.The adapter I use came with a selection of plug tips for the device end of things...one of them fits the canon socket perfectly.



The polarity of the socket on the camera is given in the manual. The centre pin of the socket is negative...therefore the sleeve will be positive.

The Canon wide angle adapter I have is a 55mm adapter. I don't think it was made for the 1014 specifically. You'll certainly get the best results w/ the 1014 specific adapters. But you can experiment w/ anything you can fit onto the end. You can end up w/ some wildly distored immages/ vingetting etc. Interesting stuff.

Building a battery pack sholdn't be too difficult. You can make some nice packs from Radio Shack (Tandy's) hoby boxes. The think that's kind of cool about my Elmo's is the external swithch/ battery pack runs on the pack that fits in the camera. Also make it easy to use an external power supply and any switch. You should easily be able to do the same thing w/ 1014. As said before be CERTIAN of the polairty BEFORE plugging it in.

I've been using Energizer brand nimh's which have a mah of 2500.
As the total charged voltage is less (in theory) than a brand new set of alkalines the battery check never goes fully to the right but it stays in the good area for a long long time.

so the power adapter (for mains power) would be a 9v Negative Tip..?

but what MilliAmp rating should the Power Adapter be? i dont want to under/over power and blow up my camera haha

I'm a little perplexed by the instructions in the 1014 XL-S manual. (Please excuse my technical impracticality!) It states: "The plug of the external power source used must have a negative center pin."

However, the centre pin seems to be situated in the camera's socket, as stated by ronnoco - and if this is negative, the plug itself should be positive, right?

I've got one of those universal power adapters, too, but I am concerned about choosing the correct polarity setting.

(I have already inadvertently used a 12V adapter on the camera, which I'm worried may have caused some damage...)
