16mm - double/single perforations?

Hi,

How does the double-single perf thing work out please? You have a projector with double teeth to direct the film through the gate, but what happens on the single perf side of the film, does this just sit on the inner part of the roller and avoid the second set of teeth? This must be the same for the cameras as well?

Single perf was also used for sound striping I can see - they must have played a lot of games to get the width of the film and the frame size optimal?

Don't run a single perf film through a double perf projector unless you first remove the sprockets on one side. But running double perf film through a single perf projector is fine. I use to do it all the time. I'm going to be borrowing a double perf camera myself and still have yet to find a place that sells it, I'd hate to have to ask my buddy if I can machine the teeth off one side.

A double-perf 16mm projector? That must be fairly old.

There's also a difference in the frame rate as the old silent 16mm double perf projectors and cameras (Keystone, etc) normally run at 16/18fps and the modern (so to speak) 16mm single perf film runs at 24fps.

Interesting, I've never seen any 16mm product that runs at 18fps. You have? I have however seen regular 8 projectors that do that. Up until recently I thought only super 8 went that speed.

My Keystone A-7 has its "normal" speed at 16fps, and that's what all the exposure guides are set to. It can do 10, 16, 24, 32, 48, and 64 fps, but even the manual says use 16, the rest for special cases/effects.

I haven't the chance to use this camera yet, sticking with the standard 8 ones for now. Your question did get me curious so I ran the same film (News Parade of 1943) thru my Keystone "toy" projector and my Telex 16mm and did some checks. Seems the Keystone projector is actually running at around 22fps based on using the Telex as a true 24fps standard. The motion seems to be real-time as best as I could tell.

Now that is curious: Keystone made a camera and projector one would assume would go together yet their speeds don't match? Well, let me amend my response with a big, fat maybe then.

I'm glad I did this test because when I finally get around to using the A-7, I'll be sure to set the speed to 24fps so its plays correctly.

my H16 has 16fps marked in red, so I guess that was the preferred speed back in the day.

sure is hard to get hold of 100D Ektachrome in 16mm over here, the only place I know only sells it in 400ft cans
