My Super 8 setup for Shuttle Endeavour's Last Launch

Post by Sasounet »

Hi,

Here is a couple of pictures of my Super 8 setup (actually it was super 8 and single 8 ) during Space Shuttle Endeavour launch on may 16th. Needless to say that I was standing out amongst the "cellphone camera" crowd...

Please don't ask me if everything went well because it did not... It was great fun though.

That's the biggest super 8 lens I've ever seen! How come things didn't go well? You didn't knock one over that fence did you?

Nice set-up!

I feel your pain - I shot a Shuttle night launch in '99, and ended up with a bunch of blurry cr@p for my trouble.

Still an awe inspiring event to attend though - sorry to see the shuttle coming to the close of it's program.

The thing ontop of the Fujica is a (gun?)telescope I suppose. The screw-on lens is to extend the longest focal-length? I suppose it wasn't stable enough :). Or the thing toppled at the moment of climax.

I 'filmed' the solar eclipse in turkey, Antalya 2006 29th March on Kodachrome 40. Got some nice images but the film is/wasn't sensitive enough for such occasion, also the shutter and max aperture aren't the best of things. I.e. you can't register the faint outer structures of the corona :(
Best would be to shoot on color negative and use a camera with B-exposure like NIZO professional, Bauer 512, Leicina special.
A sturdy tripod is essential for long focal length S8 or 35mm still.

Nowadays (and then) there is software for DSLR Canon (and others?) which control the camera from a laptop with Windows which automatically does bracketing and HDR montage of the images. You can have the images ready when back at the hotel.
What http://www.wendycarlos.com/eclipse.html and I did in the photochemical darkroom using circular gradient masks.
Kind regards,

I was aware of the implied meaning of that. :)
Of course I did the experimental printing in my own lab. Alone.

I thought Wendy achieved a lot in Music (TRON scores), Physics and Solar photography. Being female in the 60-ies and 70-ies. Later I learned a bit more on the background from another Solar eclipse chaser.
Kind regards,

André
