Leitz Cinegon ring diaphragms

Post by joelpierre »

I have a 10 mm Leitz Cinegon whose ring diaphragms runs too freely (for my taste).

Would you have an idea to make the rotation of the ring closest to the usual (rotation and notched graduated)?

The iris ring rotates freely so you can do smooth adjustments for exposure or fades. It's a normal feature for movie lenses, unlike a lens for a stills camera where you have click stops for each aperture setting. Some DSLR shooters that use old SLR film lenses have their lenses de clicked so they can adjust the aperture manually during shooting without any annoying jumps in exposure. So, it's normal and not a fault of your particular lens.

Not sure whether you could have the ring tightened or adapted by a technician.

This is a bit funny as people pay monies to remove aperture click stops, recenter optics, etc...of still photo lenses to make them "comparable" to the precision of professional motion picture optics.

Here is an example of such a service. Highly recommended and prices start at $250 US e.g.

Perhaps you might interest them in "reverse-engineering" this specific service? :)

I have the same lenses and it produces superlative resolution, detail and contrast in the tiny Super 8 format. But I will also admit the iris is a bit too freewheeling for my taste and has a tendency to "drift" from set position.

Perhaps a higher viscosity lubricant is needed. A messy job best left to a capable lens tech.

I surrounded the ring with a seal rubber plumbing. It brakes the ring.

Disadvantage: I do not see the aperture values.

I need a transparent silicone bracelet.
