Garage sale finds

Post by etimh »

Well, it just goes to show, that you still can find some Super 8 junk at garage sales. I used to smirk whenever I read in some guide to Super 8 that you should "look for Super 8 cameras and gear at garage sales." It might have been the case sometime in the 80s right after the video cam boom, but in my searching from the late 90s to the present, I never saw a single movie camera, ever.

Until today. There it was, an almost perfect condition Kodak Ektasound 140--for one dollar. I won't ever need to use it for shooting film so I wasn't sweating if it worked or not, and I was even thinking that I hardly need more cams to "display." But it is the camera that is being used in the new Super 8 film (at least in one of the scenes), and I was just so amazed to finally find something at garage sale. So I bought it.

Looks extremely clean inside and out, but who knows what's going on inside with all the plastic gear mess. Still, I'm going to throw some batteries in to see if it will run. And it is so crazy looking that I think I will leave it out for conversation for a while. Then, who knows, when I finally need to clean up, I'll probably put it out at one of my garage sales for someone else to "find."

Also got a very clean GAF 2388 Dual 8 projector--also for a buck. Can't beat that.

Nice one.

Here's a flash frame from the trailer for Super8 the movie. What's wrong with this picture?

@Tim- See, you look and you will find. Gear is at garage sales ALL the time. Happy hunting!

@Carl- um, let's see, edge dating/numbering, wierd-ass sprocket holes that don't seem to look like 16mm even...Regular 8 has a sprocket hole at the top LEFT and bottom LEFT corner of each frame (unless you are looking at them backwards of course).

As usual, even filmmakers that claim they know formats take huge liberties and simply fail when it comes to stuff like this. It's like they WANT their movies to end up with a huge list of goofs and gaffs on IMDB.com.

It is only in the spirit of authentic ciné :) Hence you get ghost images of perforations only.
Kind regards,
