Okay Roger pretty good as per usual but two things (neither of which probably matter)

but I think his nose isn't quite right - it looks pointier in the cartoon - I think the bridge on your models nose is a bit too high and full

and when he furrows his eyebrow wouldn't his cheek move a bit too?

- like I said not important, but otherwise good -- I'm really looking forward to the final cut :-)

It depends on which version of Dr. Quest you look at and in which particular cut. If you watch the series, he never looks quite the same in any two shots. One of the things I discovered early on is that basing the sculpts on a specific pose is problematic because, once they turn their head, the look changes. So I made an early decision to go for a "generic" Dr. Quest and a "generic" Race, etc. I basically used the same dodge that the original animators used when dealing with the characters: If there is red hair and goatee, then it's Dr. Quest. If there's short white hair and a red shirt with an open flap, then it's Race. If there's a yellow pompadour and a black turtle neck, then it's Jonny. If there's a turban, then it's Hadji. If their faces change a bit from one shot to the other, it doesn't matter because their identifying features aren't really based on the shape of their face, eyes or nose but, rather, by the color of their facial hair and what they wear.

Probably. But I decided to furrow the brow after the fact. Only so much you can do in Photoshop for a 3 second cut. ;)

Hi Roger,

I'm quite mesmerised by what you are doing. My only criticsim in the latest clip is that the fill light (screen right) is a little too far back (into the scene) and/or perhaps a little too bright, causing a disconcerting shadow region to appear, when he turns his head, right down the middle of his face. It's the symmetry which is disconcerting more than anything else - that his head comes to rest at almost the exact midpoint of the two light sources.

But in any case it's really interesting.

Not that it necessarily matters but do you hold copyright on the original cartoon? Will you be able to exhibit the completed work without copyright issues?

cheers

Mistakes and errors abound throughout this project. Compromise is the name of the game or it would never get finished.

I hold no copyright on any of the JQ original cartoon stuff. Just doing this for fun. Think "Star Wars Fan Film" and you get the idea.

Sure. I understand.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the completed work. While I'm not a fan of Norman Rockwell I am a fan of what you're doing there.

cheers
