How to Process Cine Film by Charlie Chaplin 1918

Post by gianni1 »

Of particular interest for processing, drying, and editing film, see the scenes starting at five minutes : thirty seconds ( between 5:30 - 7:00) in part 1 of Charlie Chaplin's "How to make movies" from 1918. I can imagine scaling this down from 35mm cine film to smaller gauge 16 or super 8mm film formats.

Thanks, Interesting tools. The size of these things. Hand propelled. The processing tank extends through the floor.

What length of 35mm film would fit the frame? 25 strokes, two sided, 1 meter? that makes some 50 meters...

And the nonchalance how things are handled. All routine.

No smoking as the film is very easy to set on fire :)

And indeed the stupidity of the remarks. No sound. People seem to know very like. Recently somebody wondered, in front of an audience, why in some WWII scene the character didn't use his cell-phone to call in some help :D
Kind regards,

André

Fascinating to observe a time when such a popular actor & filmmaker would be so involved with all facets of production that they'd build their own studio and lab. In the earlier years it was standard practice but I imagine 10 or 15 years after this film that it would be unusual for any filmmaker of his caliber to step into a film lab. I wonder just when that switch, that detachment happened?
