I've roved through the forum but don't see any entries from anyone who has actually bought and used the gakken portable projector, now available here:

Also it seems like a super 8 - not regular 8 - DYI camera would be a natural for Gakken but the prototype seems to have been all they did. I wonder if lomography is looking into that as well (how many times can they resell the diana?)
Finally, I wonder how dang hard it would be for some clever person to modify the DYI hand crank projector to shoot film hand-cranked. Probably a crack smoker idea, but still...

Re: gakken projector?
There are several on ebay that claim it's a dual 8 projector. They're a lot of money for a crappy little toy projector.
Re: gakken projector?
I have looked at his carefully and I came to the conclusion that it actually "projects" PAPER strips (through a complicated arrangement of mirrors) that are preprinted or you can "draw" yourself. If I remember correctly, the paper has a central perforation and can not be used for film (I don't know, maybe 9.5 if dimensions correct--which I seriously doubt). A fun projector concept and I can not imagine why they did not make it compatible with film. You can figure this out if you look at the directions--printed in Japanese but with pictures and available on the internet.
On a different subject, why do I have to change my password every frickin time I log onto this site. It is excessive.

Re: gakken projector?
I apologize. I obviously have this wildly confused with a different kit.

Re: gakken projector?
The review is important:
This projector is a fun toy, but it cannot take the place of a real projector. When I ran a real of Super 8 film through it, I noticed lines I had never seen when using my old Bell and Howell projector. Next, I ran a reel through the B&H. No lines. Then through the Gakken. Lines. Back through the B&H, and the lines were still present.
If you do not care if your film gets scratched, this is the projector for you. It is very small and light, and it uses an LED rather than an expensive projector bulb. For me, though, the scratches out weigh the benefits.
Puts the product shot in a new light:

Pity.

Re: gakken projector?
Iirc Roger Evans once pointed out that the projector only can operate prints ok
Which do have the emolution on thr opposite site of original camera films thus not prone to scratch the film - at least not on the same level. Sure the projector can be trimmed/tuned not to scratch films anyway.
