Internal lightmeter defect (beaulieu 4008 ZMII)

Post by loublouet »

Hello everybody,
I’m the happy owner of a Beaulieu 4008 ZMII that had been revised by Bjorn Andersson three years ago. Happy, at least until recently, when the needle of the internal lightmeter became somehow capricious : even though it still seems reactive to ambiant light variations, the amplitude of its movements is drastically reduced, restricted to the quarter of the maximal amplitude. In short, it has become useless.
I initially suspected a battery problem, but the motor still seems to work great. Has someone experienced such a problem ? Could this result from a poor electrical contact ?
And mostly, is a repair worth it (if possible)?
I know it’s better to rely on an external lightmeter, but in most situations, this internal meter seemed quite accurate and gave me very close readings compared to the external one. So in certain circumstances, it was convenient to use, with very little risk of bad exposure… (except for the exposure risk due to the cameraman, of course  )
Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.
Regards, Etienne

Better check the battery voltages under operating conditions. I.e. when the motor is running.
The hull of the battery is ground, the middle ring 3.6 volt and the centre pad 7.2 volt. If the battery voltages drop too much the exposure system drops dead too :) The 3.6 is especially important to the exposure system.
Kind regards,

André

Thanks for the tip, André. I'll give a try as soon as I have the opportunity to grab a decent voltmeter... if I find out how to measure voltage while the motor is running! Regards, Etienne

Well, if I didn’t find a way to measure battery voltages under operating conditions, I tested the battery with another 4008 ZMII camera, whose internal meter appeared to work fine. So it’s definitively not the battery that is to blame, I’m afraid…
