external hard disk
Would any external hard disk with 7200 RPS and usb interface do for video editing? Which one would you advise?
Thanks

I think so - as long as you're using USB 2 or 3 - not USB1. I tend to stick to only a few brand names - maxtor, seagate and western digital

Re: external hard disk
yes and no. if you use one that has fw800 and raid 0, i.e. the wd mybook studio, you can work with less compression and more realtime effects, and if you connect it to esata you can even edit uncompressed hd, it's awesome. if all you need is basic dv editing you don't even need 7200, any drive works fine.
Re: external hard disk
thanks. Are these asata compatible with spring 2010 version Imacs?
I am considering one of these:
Freecom Hard Drive Quattro 1TB

Re: external hard disk
There are no macs that support Esata natively. And iMacs don´t have any place for expansion cards (unless you hack it, open up your iMac and replace the wifi card with a miniPCI Esata card).

Re: external hard disk
my mac supports esata. wait, you mean *apple* macs?
fw800 is faster than usb and those wd's have that too. imacs had fw800 two years ago at least.

Re: external hard disk
FW800 is way too slow, once you go Esata there is no going back. ;)
All my macs support Esata too, both Macpro and my iMac. But all Esata support have to be added from third party suppliers. That is so sick, IMHO.
Esata should be the default connection for all external drives!

Re: external hard disk
agree completely. fw800 is still noticeably faster than usb though, so if you don't have esata that's what you should use, even if it means paying more for the drive. my mac actually does have esata built in, but it's not an apple mac.
to me mac is an os, whether it runs on a box from dell or apple.

yeah i tried to be subtle, but it seems like nobody got it. I'M RUNNING A HACKINTOSH, ACTUALLY A COUPLE OF THEM. THAT'S WHY I HAVE ESATA. satisfied?
