Why shooting on Super 8? Dagie knows...

Post by Juergen »

schmalfilm magazine took the opportunity to shoot a last roll of Kodachrome - a very special one: a cartridge with 60 meters of Live Sound film, produced more than 25 years ago. It was processed at the end of December 2010, in the last days of the Kodachrome era at Dwayne's, Kansas, USA. We asked 10 German filmmakers why they are using Super 8. Have a look at those brilliant colors - even if it is winter and the film is 25 years old! We did not change anything at all. This commercial is the first one in a series to promote Super 8 and schmalfilm magazine. We will use it as a viral campaign and on festival screenings.

Here you may see it:

In German only - sorry ;)

Shoot!

Very, very nice and so fitting a send off for one great film stock. Too bad about the emulsion lines from a dirty gate, but not hardly noticeable too busy looking at the beautiful images. Well done!

S-8mm sound film is sorely missed. I miss it because it died too soon. Just as the revolution was starting for S-8mm use as a camera original and finishing on digital video, it went away. It allowed for one-man-band sound films such as documentaries to be easily made with the new work flow.

Hi David,

there is a man in Spain who is re-inventing Single 8 and Super 8 sound cartridges. schmalfilm magazine will publish a report about his work in the next issue. Perhaps sound cartridges will soon come back :).

Hi André,

Ignacio Benedeti tested a first Single 8 Sound cartridge for schmalfilm magazine. The test will be published in a week. We will ask the spanish inventor Angel Caro to test a 60-m-Super-8-Sound cartridge filled with his striped Ektachrome 100D, too.
