Super 8 projector slowing down from time to time?

Post by emilastrand »

hey,

My Braun FP3S has been running good since i bought it a couple of weeks ago, but now the motor seems to be slowing down from time to time... Like it shift through the framerate. I dont know why, i installed a new bulb but it didnt happen right after that, just a little bit after... should i clean somewhere or something? Let it rest? I dont know. I noticed it yesterday when the bulb been on for a while. I thought: better let it rest until next day. 24 hours later same thing happens. Anyone knows anything about this?

it's very annoying and impossible to remove the flicker when filming it off the screen like this. appreciate some advice!

thanks

Hi,

the "slow down" might be caused by the belt: Most of the belts have been made out of a rubber that disintegrates after some decades. When the effects start, the belt gets "slippery" (which sounds like your effect).
(Of course there could also be a problem with the motor, the friction clutch, ... )

As for the flicker: You might reduce it by choosing a special fps-rate (e.g. 16.6666 fps or 25 fps for PAL-video as both speeds are fractions of 50Hz; in the USA you might want to try 20fps to match the NTSC's 60Hz). You'll also have to adjust your video-camera's "shutter speed" (as short as possible).
When you do have a PC with M$ Windows, you might also succeed removing the flicker in post with the free software VirtualDub http://www.virtualdub.org/ and its free plugin "MSU deflicker" http://compression.ru/video/deflicker/index_en.html . (Of course several video-editing-programs for Win/MacOS already include such "deflicker tools" or such tools are available as an add-on. E.g. a friend of mine prefers "GB Deflicker" http://www.granitebaysoftware.com/Produ ... ctGBD.aspx as it integrates into his Adobe Premiere.)

Hi,

thank you for your answer! I was suspecting this too when I looked inside it from the bulb hatch... What should I do? Replace it in some way?

as for the flicker, thank you for the info, but it wasnt really the question, I was more annoyed that the projector would slowdown sometiems and then go back to regular speed, which is annoying cause i cant have one setting on the camera to remove the flicker (since the projector will change projection speed by itself)

thank you!
