I just purchased a MINT 1014. Everything works fine with no film, but with a film cartridge the motor bogs down after about 20s of running. Any advice? Seems to me maybe the grease is old and needs a re-lube. What do you guys think?

Just a follow up. I held the piece that turns the spool in the film cartridge. I can tell it has a clutch in it, and it seems to be working properly. If I hold the clutch for as long as it took for the motor to slowly bog down, nothing happens. It sounds like it is working just fine, so I can't imagine that it is the take up spool drive slowing down and bogging the motor. I guess it would have to do with the claw slowing down because there is nothing else that contacts the film cartridge. The cartridge itself seemed fine when I put it in my Canon 814AZ. Sure is strange because after I would stop running the the thing for a few seconds all would return to normal.
Frustrating.
Thanks,
Chris

The film cart might be stiff? Banging it on the side of your leg might help. If the camera has not been used for awhile, the motor might be heating up too much?? :?:
Try finding a good service shop for the camera, it could just be a simple fix, if the problem stays, and you cannot get it serviced, you could always D.I.Y...risky, but if you cannot get it fixed, attempting might be better than nothing.

Yes, I just ran another roll (OLD expired film) and it did the same thing. It ran longer this time than it did the first time. It seems like the oil in the gears has just gotten so stiff that the motor is bogging down when I put film in it. I live near LA, and there are a couple of places that can service these cameras here. Pro8mm told me that they don't service the 1014AZ, but I sent them another email to see if they could just take it apart and lube it. Spectra labs works on all sorts of cameras, but they want at least $200 to work on any camera. That is a lot of cash for a squirt of grease.

Don't remember any more but me thinks the 1014 (E?) uses 6 AA batteries. 4 in the handle two on the side. or are they only for the lightmeter? As I say, cant remeber anymore...
Re: Canon 1014 W/ Sluggish Motor
Yes, there are six AA batteries. I think they are all for the main power bus for the camera.

just let it run some 10 minutes, unloaded.
You should messure the current taken from the batteries. Isn't there an external power input? If the Ampere doesn't get lower after a while then the 20 years laying about cannot be shed off.
Also check the Ampere with a cartridge in. See what happens when its rpm goed down.

Re: Canon 1014 W/ Sluggish Motor
try to make series of long "bursts" running on empty (no cart) 15 seconds run then 5 secs rest in series. while running move it around all axes slowly. this may "loosen up" the old lube a bit as there may occur some heat in the bearings. if a noise appears and increasing, let it rest and shorten the run time using the same rest time.
after some exercise you may try with a cartridge to see if there is any improvement.
no guarantee of course but worth a try.
shoot......

That is really good advice. I don't think it has an external power connector. I would probably have to run it with one battery out and use alligator clips to measure the current. I was thinking about letting it running on run lock empty for a while. The second cartridge ran a little better.aj wrote:just let it run some 10 minutes, unloaded.
