As I mentioned in another thread, I just got back a pile of processed film that I did during the end of summer 2001. I've been waiting a while to get this stuff processed, and I have to say that it was definitely worth the wait. I am VERY PSYCHED about how good this film looks. I have ten rolls that will probably edit down to about 8 minutes of film once I get it transferred (Roger will be getting this stuff soon). The film is basically a short travelogue (without narration) of an area in New Jersey that has some unique 50's style architecture. I can't wait to get this transferred, edited and with musical score. I didn't look at everything because I didn't want to run it all through an editor, but 90% of these shots are exactly what I was looking for. And this is just a hint of what is on those reels... you know those tabs that include a couple frames of your film and a couple of someone else's film? There is a frame on one of those that by the naked eye looks like one of the best pictures I've ever taken. I only hope that the rest of the shot looks that good.

Don't be afraid to try things with K40... I think these shots look great, and some of them are taken in less than ideal lighting conditions. I may go back one weekend this summer to take a few shots with my Beaulieu 4008 (all of the film was done with my Elmo 1012... a highly underrated and underappreciated camera in super8land, which did beautiful work) at between 2-8 fps so I can get longer exposure times for night or sunset shots.
GET OUT AND SHOOT SOME FILM!!! WHY ARE YOU SITTING IN FRONT OF A COMPUTER READING THIS???

K40 and the Elmo 1012 SXL
Paul, now you know why I am a Kodachrome fan! It has limitations, but sharpness and deep colors are not part of that equation. Simply beautiful and which cries to be projected on a big screen.
The Elmo 1012SXL is a great camera capable of high quality images. I am glad your camera still works. I am afraid my experience with mine and what I have seen of others, is that it is a fragile camera. Take care of it best you can. Mine broke and I sunk over $200 trying to get it fixed by professional repairmen who couldn't fix it. I loved shooting with it, but robust it is not so take care and keep filming!

Elmo and Kodachrome
I keep my Elmo 1012 in excellent condition. I have a padded case for it, and only take it out when I'm filming something seriously. I won't expose it to water, dust, extreme temps, etc. That camera makes some EXCELLENT pictures. The meter is accurate, I've never had a cartridge jam in it, it's solid as a rock...<p>
As for K40... I am in love with the images that are reproduced by it. I gasped with glee with I saw some of the images on my newly processed film. Man alive... there is nothing better than properly exposed Kodachrome.

Amen to that. I just set up my Workprinter to transfer a roll I just got back from Wal-Mart today. I set it up, watched it go for a few frames and I'm just amazed at how good the stuff really looks. I guess I'm jaded, staring at REAL video all day. So I come back to my cube and realise I must've been watching this thing chug along at 1fps for about an hour!
So obviously, I've gotten straight back to work...

Elmo 1012SXL
Paul, same for me. I thought the way I cared for mine it would last forever. In between shots on one roll of film, the camera broke just sitting there on my tripod. Would not take up film and made funny noises. The control board crapped out and there are no spares. Could happen to yours but I hope not. I loved that camera and know what you mean. I had over $500 in it when all was said and done and it smarted to lose that kind of dough.
Like anything else, enjoy it while you can!

Elmo
I agree with you on the Elmo... however I think that can happen at any time to any camera. We're dealing with 30 year-old machinery and electronics. We can't expect it to last forever. As you say, enjoy it while it lasts!
