My question is can you still get these?
If so, where can you buy one. My camera is a Sankyo CME 440. The light plugs into a screw connection (probably an AF or UNC type fixing I am guessing).
Or, I was wondering if I could knock one up. What kind of spec would I be looking at and has anyone done this?
Cheers

There are a few non-sanyo lights on e-bay although some are listed as video lights - for movie cameras you are looking at much more power eg 500 or 1000 watts as sensitivity much lower than video cameras where 10 or 20w may be adequate.
Avoid those using reflector photoflood bulbs as these are very difficult to obtain - those using halogen bulbs are more useful.
Take care they can get extremely hot so a self build may not be advisable !
Most of the units mount as an attachment onto the tripod screw with a bar although some may mount directly onto the top of the camera using a screw. Don't know if Sanyo used a proprietary fitting on top or if it is a tripod thread (as on one of my Canons)- if tripod thread it is 1/4inch Whitworth thread.
You may find that using the top socket also retracts the internal filter - this is designed for tungsten balanced films but would need additional external filters if using daykight film such as Ektachrome 100D

Re: Cine Camera Movie Light DIY job?
Hi. Yes, you can still find them. I have one which I am willing to part with, and probably some spare bulbs as well. I say "probably" as I am in Brazil for the next ten days, then back in UK where I can check.
My son here also has one he no longer needs, which he used to use with a Sankyo CME444 (which is also available).
Neither are Sankyo specific, mount by bar from tripod bush.
If there is any interest, I can also bring back with me a Sankyo Sound 500 projector in very good nick.
