Kodachrome: 1935-2010

Post by nickrapak »

At this moment, Dwayne's is accepting their last roll of Kodachrome. Thus ends 75 years of the greatest film ever made.

On April 16, 1935 Kodak introduced Kodachrome.

It has taken us from the depths of the Depression...

To the depths of war...

To the growth of suburbia...

To the growth of technology...

And now ends in the midst of another recession.

It has captured major historical events that changed the world...

And family outings that will be remembered forever.

The colors were second to none.

The images will last a lifetime.

Thanks for the memories...

Just to continue with the history above, below are some old image and movie taken with Kodachrome.

This link is a Kodachrome movie from.... the VJ day in Hawaii which is of course taken place in 1945.....or 65 years ago:

Ok.....this film is 16mm, so much sharper.... but when you shoot super 8mm Kodachrome with better camera and good transfer, you will see this result:

That was shot in 1975.... or 35 years ago.

For a contemporary shooting, the Kodachrome will also create a good image, and this below link show a video clip that was done professionally (added with music):

Below is someone comparing his old reel (1970s) and new reel (2007) by making almost the same scenes.

The baby in the left picture is now a Mommy who is carrying a baby on the right picture.

The original movie is here:

To sum up, you can see how beautiful is Kodachrome, even compare to that new stock (E64T) on the right, Kodachrome is still better.

Now it is only Paul Simon' song is heard:

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, Oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don't take my Kodachrome away

Good bye Kodachrome........

cheers,

I have transferred film for over 25 years, and have done hundreds of thousands of feet of Reg 8, Super 8, and 16mm. Kodachrome is awesome. My favorite version was the original (before Kodachrome II). It was very slow (Daylight ASA 10) and very contrasty, but if you nailed the exposure, the results had a dreamlike quality. The below link is to one of my transfers, from Christmas 1952.
