Projector speed

Post by superadio »

I am shooting more 8mm now. My camera has 16 fps, but my projector, Bolex 18-3TC operates at 12 or 18 fps. Can is use some device to adjust that speed? Its a good projector, as dual 8, and was hoping not have to buy more equipment.

I take it you are shooting standard (regular) 8mm film?

Most dual gague projectors offer 18fps as their main speed. This is the speed super 8 amateur films tend to be shot at. Standard 8mm cameras usually run at 16fps.

If you wish to project at 16fps you need either a dual gague projector with continuously variable speed (by means of a dial rather than a switch) or a dedicated standard 8mm projector - which will likely be older than your dual.

But don't worry. You will notice very little difference showing 16fps material at 18fps.

Usually the difference between 16 and 18 fps speed on screen in not objectionable, but if your camera speed is actually slower say 15 fps and
your projector runs a little fast, you might not like it. Easy and best
fix to me would be to buy a Bolex M-8 projector which has variable speed
and is one of the best all-time R-8mm projectors. Your films will look
fantastic. There are many other great R-8mm only projectors with variable
speed and they are one of the big reasons I still shoot R-8mm film. Good
luck and have fun!
