HD Super 8mm Spirit Transfer - A Clip!
A while back there was a 7 page thread discussing wether it was "worth it" to transfer Super 8mm to HD. Lot's of good technical discussion about pixel resolution etc. People can talk all they want (and I enjoy a good debate) but in the end filmmaking is about creating an image. Here's the first images we can show from the Cinelicious' Spirit with the new Super 8mm gate (and settings finally dialed in):

Well, that looks simply stunning.
Is this for a commercial? Could be for jeans
Certainly shows the power of what jeans can do.
Also a nice glow of late 70-ies to the images.
The glory years of Super-8. If they only had had the materials
and post processing of today.
Are these S8 gates so costly because there are so few? And thus the design/startup is spread only over some 10-20. Or are the materials and work so intensive?

Hi AJ,
Yes it was for a commercial. The amazing thing about film is we can take those images from the 1970s and remaster them using current technology (because film is archival) and it will look better than it was ever seen originally.
The gate is expensive because you're also paying DFT-Film (who owns Spirit telecines) for the R&D, and firmware updates that makes the Spirit (which originally sold for $1.2M) capable of transferring Super 8mm. It is true it's very expensive... which is why they didn't sell a lot of Super 8mm options... but we love Super 8mm and when we saw the image we had to buy it. It will pay for itself over time. We're doing quite a bit of high-end super 8mm work now.

Well, here is the clip youtube-included in some advertising in a trendy magazine, but still no technical info there either of course : (aj wrote:

It does look great. Can you give us any additional info, what stock was it? What camera/lenses? Was it S8 cropped to 16:9 or a modified camera?

Hey Guys,
Glad you all like it. For this one you're just going to have to appreciate it for what it is... beautifully shot film. Sometimes clients, agencies, or production companies want to keep the details about their productions private.... a right that we as a company totally respect. There's a whole bunch of beautiful stuff we've done that we can't show at all. Just the way it goes.
Happy shooting!

Reviewing and studying the clip once more shows that the aperture has 8 blades/corners. Now which cameras/lenses do have 8 bladed apertures?aj wrote:Well, that looks simply stunning.

With some effort one could count the number of surfaces of glass too

Must be an AAA brand considering the sharpness of the sand and wood structures. I'll check my line-up of cameras this evening.

Kind regards,

Well, then the guessing starts.
Stock: Kodak Vision2 (or 3) 200T.
Camera: Beaulieu 4008, 6008 or 7008 or Canon 1014.
I like the way the film is coloured. In many ways it looks like the colours you would typically see from Kodachrome 40 transferred with a Workprinter (purple tint), but it has a very nice warmth to it that makes it different again. Almost golden.

Andre - There are a lot of cameras out there that can resolve grains of sand. And I've seen a lot of SD vs. HD telecine for Super 8mm. The detail you're seeing is the result of good glass & shooting yes... but I promise what you're responding to is the result of a sharp, high resolution transfer... which goes back to a previous question that was raised in a recent post as to wether an HD transfer of Super 8mm is "worth it".aj wrote: Must be an AAA brand considering the sharpness of the sand and wood structures. Andreas - Glad you liked the creative. I think Steve did an amazing job collaborating with the client to create that golden summery look.
