As to the E100D, there might be problems to use it in some cameras (seems that no stock is perfect nowadays) but certainly a lot fewer than with E64T, which is a nightmare as standard colour stock considering the 40/160 cameras...

The news then is not the introduction of Ektachrome 100D in Super8 (we already had it somehow) but the end of Plus-X.

To shoot mostly E100D and Fomapan R100 in B/W I would pass to DS8.

I don't think Kodak would consider discountinuation notices as news and would invite the editor of major ciné magazine to a conference for that.

More likely they will announce the E100d and some new road to BW registration. I.e. BW negative materials in S8 as there are hardly people who project My hypothesis!

Mine too, but because B/W negative is much easier for home developing than reversal.

BTW most supereighters around me also project their films (me too).

Assuming that the new 100d is notched correctly (as 100 daylight) then a bauer 512 (like all but the earlier Bauers) will read the stock as 160 asa if you switch the daylight filter to 'bulb' (which you must do with a bauer and daylight film). You then need to compensate the exposure by opening up 2/3rds of a stop. With the little thumb wheel at the top of the bauer to control exposure, this is quite an easy thing to do.

and yes, the later Bauers will think it is 160asa - i have tried shooting some in my Bauer s715xl and had to compensate with 2/3 of a stop underexposure.

Just spoke with my contact at Kodak in Stockholm - they advised that there will be a world wide press release today about the film and expect it will be available by early summer.

Here are some Kodak facts that are confirmed:

Ektachrome 100D will be available early summer 2010.

Plus-X will be phased out during the next few months.

Ektachrome 64T will be phased out during the next few months.

Vision2 200T in Super8 will be upgraded to Vision3 200T later this year.

Kodak is very committed to the Super8 community and the voice of the community was one of the reasons why they decided to launch the 100D film. This means Kodak listens to us!

Ektachrome 100D is also a film they plan to keep for years.

I welcome the 100D and I think it's great that Kodak still supports Super8. Thanks Kodak!

About time too! I was never particularly keen on 64T but used to use it because 100D from Wittner was so expensive to buy from abroad. To be able to get this direct from Kodak will be fantastic.

As for sunny weather- as has already been said, a quality screw-in ND filter does the job nicely, or for deep contrast and saturation on a sunny day, a polarising filter.

As you've no other filtration (indeed no deteriorating built-in gelatine 85 filters) it won't have a negative effect on your image quality.

I primarily shoot B&W reversal in both Super 8 and 16mm and EXCLUSIVELY project my films. Some potential B&W neg stock is useless to me. The loss of Plus-X (both S8 AND 16mm!) from Kodak is a tragedy, in my opinion.

I don't mean to sound like a whiner, always complaining about what is being taken from us (and the 100D sounds like a good thing), but having two different, relatively cheap, B&W reversal stocks was a good thing.

I am disappointed.

Certainly some mixed emotions with this news! If 100D is more compatible with cameras, I guess its a good move.

Losing Plus-X though is a real blow. In terms of grain it was a terrific stock and of all the film currently available I felt it was the most beautiful. Really classic imagery came out of it and looked great projected.

Does this announcement apply also the negative Plus-X for 16mm, 7231? Or is it just the reversal that is discontinued?

Sadly 7231 is also on the discontiued notice. 7231 was my main stock. Then 7265. Bugger. I will have to explore ORWO.

They won't be bringing a b/w neg stock into super 8 (unless they have left over '31 I guess).

It is too bad about Plus-X. Damn, that was a beautiful film stock. I shot my short, "Ennui" with that. Well at least we still have Tri-X. And, damn, I'm happy about the 100D. Excellent stock. No tears will be shed from me over the 64T...

I spoke to Kodak here in the UK a few minutes ago, and asked if they had any idea as to when the new stock might be available.

According to them it hasn't actually been manufactured yet, so there will be quite some time to wait, although to be fair this is in no way contradictory to what others have reported about it being expected some time in the early summer 2010.

It is certainly a shame about Plus-X, which has been my personal stock of choice for some time, but probably logical from a purely financial POV. If I look through my sales figures over the past few years Tri-X has outsold it by a factor of something like 3:1, so possibly the market has forced the decision it upon itself really.

Colour reversal has always outsold both types of B&W by an even bigger factor.

I've often tried to convince people either over the phone or face to face to try B&W reversal, but the reality is that most people want/expect Super 8 film to be presented in colour, just like the 70s were...
