Did you know......

Post by MovieStuff »

.....that Mike Brantley's old Super 8 forum is still around? Not sure if he's still the moderator or if someone else has taken over but it's all there, with posts that go back to 2000.

Maybe this is old news but I thought he had taken it down so I was surprised to find it still active. Not many posts but there's still a pulse.

Yeah, the weird part is looking at how many posts from 2002 that Alex felt compelled to "edit" years and years later. Speaking of 2002, here's a funny post that I wrote back then:

(Organ music rising and falling in the background)

Oh, ye-ah. Praise the lawd of infinite formats! May yo 8mm always be super and yo frame lines steady. Be synchronous unto your neighbor and deliver your film NOT unto the hands of infidels but to those that beLIEVE (say it with me, "beLIEVE!") in the virtue of the mighty 8mm frame. Though I know I walk through the valley of video, I have the strength that comes from resolution and the power of saturation. I anoint my body of work with lubricant in that my image may be cleaner and my film path truer. Ultimately, may the only clap you encounter be at the head of each take and the only dim bulb you deal with easily replaceable. In all these things we beg mercy under the watchful eye of the great yellow god, in who's presence all cartridges do jitter now and forever, amen.

I think Alex uses his forum as kind of an evolving blog--occasionally people pass through and he answers their questions, but mostly he revises and updates info and posts as he sees fit.

He's not such a bad dude...

The posts I'm talking about are not technical in nature. I'm referring to posts where he had disagreements with Mike Brantley or me or Chas or Matt, etc years and years ago. The edits are not about updating technical information but, rather, going back into those old posts years later and either changing his responses or adding retrospective comments about Mike's lack of character or some sort of weird parallel narrative outlining how he was mistreated by Mike or other forum members. Doing this at the time of the discussion would be one thing but searching out these old posts from years ago to make these kinds of changes just struck me as odd. I only found them accidentally while searching for something else. It would be like you or me going back into the archives of this forum and changing our responses or adding comments relating to any disagreements that you and I had. Who cares, ya know? Life goes on, at least for most people.

You'd have to ask Matt Pacini about that. Years and years ago, Matt had a Nizo on ebay that he was selling, which had an enlarged gate. A year or so before the auction, Matt posted on Mike's forum about the trials and tribulations involved during the modification. It was an incidental post in a wider discussion about widening camera gates and he never followed up about whether his finished mod was successful or not but Alex took it upon himself to contact the high bidder of Matt's auction to warn the bidder off the auction. The bidder backed out and Matt lost a lot of money.

Alex felt justified in his interference of Matt's auction, claiming that it was every forum member's responsibility to go back into old posts on any and all forums and update them, no matter how old. According to Alex, it was all Matt's fault and that the problem with the auction could have been avoided because Matt was supposed to track down and update his original post about whether or not the modification of the camera was successful. According to Alex, had Matt done that, then Alex would not have felt it necessary to contact the auction high bidder. It never occurred to Alex that it was simply none of his business and it was obvious that he was trying to get back at Matt because of disagreements they'd had in past forum discussions. To me, this is just too much. Imagine me interfering with your ebay auction because you and I had a tiff on this forum. Silly.

Hey, thanks for alerting me to the Mike Brantley forum. I remember a lot of you guys from there. And I remember Alex too.
What was the forum from around '98-2000 that was alt.cinematography.super8 or something? I was 'eddie8010' on that.
It's funny because this same community has migrated from one forum to another.
Anybody else here used to post on that alt.cinematography.super8 forum?

I remember when all that happened. Wow, that takes me back. Thanks for the memories. How time flies. And here I am with only 6 carts of Kodachrome left.

Strange to reminisce about those days: it was the Internet, the Future! How did it become nostalgic?

I'll always be grateful for those days, though. Finding Super-8 alive and well years after I thought it was dead has given me a lot of satisfaction over this decade.

The years I was out of it were good ones, but it just felt like there was something missing.

heh heh...the good ole days, eh, Roger? Remember when Alex dubbed you, Matt and I the "three Amigos" because we, uh, didn't like him?

of course, now that I write this, he's going to find it and mention it in his stupid site...a site that lost 99% of its contributors once that whole unpleasant business with Matt Pacini and his lost earnings came to head. Remember when you offered to pay Matt the difference in the money he would have had if Alex would simply "apologize" or admit that he should not have interefered in Matt's auction? And Alex wouldn't do it!

Some of those arguments were legendary. Someone should make a "best of"...

trippin' down memory-pain...

Considering the signature on the posts by this Alessandro this is the Alex from the discussion. It are mostly his websites.

Here the deputy-sherif account is an alias for Alex.
