Why many 8mm films buffs skip this Ebay?

Post by winbert »

Was I the only one to notice this Ebay auctions or I missed the important info or ... I am the lucky one??

Please analyze this...

2 Kodak EKTACHROME 64T Color Reversal Film 7280 for $14.99

3 Kodak EKTACHROME 64T Color Reversal Film 7280 NEW for $14.99

I believe whenever these 5 cartridges were purchased it won't be more than 4 years old (the time E64 was introduced). So it would be save to use this.

But only few bidders attracted.

And thanks (again) to sniper website, I could won 5 carts for only less than $30 (i.e $6/each).

I was thinking perhaps the high shipping cost (i.e $10.19) resulting low bids, but then, the seller gave me a reasonable discount shipping when I won 2 lots to become $12 by UPS Ground.

I was just thinking if he sent by Media Mail then it would be really, really a great deal.

But overall, the total cost to get these carts is still $42, is still much cheaper if I ordered from Dwyane., which will cost $17/each + shipping cost $5 (and +$0.5 for additional cart).

And more over if we compare to our friends in the other side of the pond .... Australia:

3 X Kodak Ektachrome Pro Super 8mm FILM - BRAND NEW! for US $97.74 !!!

crazy... (I fell sorry for those film buffs in Australia)

Sometimes you just get lucky when other people aren't browsing ebay as much, its a hard to predict market. It helps though to advertise out of ebay, for example I've got a load of sound ektachrome carts on and an agfa moviechrome cart, so I made a post in this forums ebay section to help it get a bit of attention from those who would be interested.

3 reels with new 64T cost $80 in Sweden, and processing is not even included... ;)
You guys in the US get everything for so little money!

Hi Kent,

$80 for 3 reels (or $27/each) is just too expensive.

Are we possibly talking about a high sales tax here?

I knew in Belgium you can buy for one cart almost $17 (2008). So if postage is not too expensive, why don't you buy from them?

You may get lucky (if we are talking about tax) that Custom will not bother with 2-3 cart coming in a parcel.

I once posted that here:

http://8mmforum.film-tech.com/cgi-bin/u ... 106#000000

The shop name is "Foto Guy" and thre is an exact address from someone replied in the forum .

I recommend everyone (in Sweden) who ask me to buy their films directly from Andec in Germany. Instead of buying the film in Sweden. The prices are lower and you can buy them with processing included (cutting the pirce a little bit more). I guess high sales tax is one of the reasons for the high price.

You never know with an auction. I once listed a 400ft roll of Ektachrome 16mm that went for $75. The next one I put up did not get any bids. But you have to be quick. A couple years back, I stumbled on a listing of 5 rolls of K25 16mm with a buy it now price of $125. It had only been up for about an hour, and I bought it.

I snagged a mint Nikon R10 for 150 bucks on ebay. Estate sale I'm guessing. I keep an eagle eye on certain items I'm in the market for.

The eBay app for iPhone let's me jump on stuff like that no matter where I am. Love it.

Oh, and good point about advertising equipment here, and other film boards. I have the following up for auction if anyone is interested. I'll probably post it in the items for sale though.

I just won a Schn. Kreuznach Ultra Wide Nizo Type III lens attachment for £3.20 last night. It comes to less than £6 including shipping. No scratches, with case. :) (Sorry I had to tell someone, my wife doesn't want to hear it.)

Here's what I don't understand. Why are there ALWAYS auctions for film that are over priced?

http://cgi.ebay.com/1-NEW-16mm-100-TRI- ... 520wt_1167

I can buy a roll of 16mm Tri-X from Kodak for 21 bucks. This auction starts the bidding at 25, with a buy-it-now price of 30! WTF!? I just don't get it.

I always go out of my way to message these people and tell them their item is overpriced for no reason, and that I can buy a new roll for less... that's NEW, and fresh...

On contrary:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-New-13-boxes- ... 0404658732

No one bid on this relative cheap price, 9 boxes of Kodak Ektachrome 64T color reversal film 7280- Color film + 4 boxes of Kodak Tri-X Reversal Film 7266- black and white film for $99

So basically 1 cartridge is $7.6 yet no bid!!

ps: IIt was re-listed a day after and sold for $130!! funny :D

cheers

this $16 beer was in Norway? and what size was it?

I have bought all kind of photography and cine goods from USA. Used to be fun although the $ was more expensive at start.

But things have become cumbersome and expensive. The USPS postage rates have gone up considerably. Due to people importing Apple thingies and sneakers en-masse customs have adopted a new regime and taxation (+delay) is far more severe. So there goes the advantage and opportunity. 40 year old cameras get taxed as new and even simple collectable books are under scrutiny. :(

So this nice box of 13pcs of s8 film was attractive. Apart from the seller not shipping outside USA its import would have cost really something.

E64T S8 incl sales tax costs about Euro 15 (US$22.50 nov-09)
Kind regards,

André

Since you have told sellers about over priced items, I was wondering if you have a noticed one using the name "Camera$". His stuff seems way too expensive to me, and when I try to see what previous items sold for, they are all listed as private.

No, that's not ringing a bell.

I got to thinking that maybe these folks are trying to make up for "sales tax." However, this listing (the one above) is at 15% higher than a fresh roll of tri-x, and the buy-it-now price is 30% higher than fresh tri-x. So, that's pretty high sales tax they're making up for.

It's possible they just have no idea what they're selling which, in and of itself, is ridiculous. I guess eBay's natural selection will see that auction go without any bids.

I just feel like any "second hand" film should be going for 50%. I've never really understood the point of selling second hand film if you can just buy it from Kodak EVEN if the seller says it was cold stored. Great, so what's in it for me? No discount? Dumb. Why risk it if you've still got to pay for lab and in some cases telecine. That's like putting 89 octane in your aston-martin. It's just weird to me.

Here's aNOTHER one:

http://tinyurl.com/kodakplastic

Now, I dunno why anyone would pay an extra 30% for a 40 year old roll of plus-x that wasn't frozen. I'm sure it's just rotten plastic at this point.

I just don't get it. Still.
