New testpictures: Canon 1014 and E64T

Post by VideoFred »

But let's do some real filmshooting here. :)

I got myself this Canon 1014 from the flea market:

I have loaded it with some fresh E64T,
and it came came out like this:

Sharpness from the 1014 is amazing.
Again I notice the very good and natural colors of E64T.

E64T cartridges supplied by BlueAudioVisual,
Exellent film processing by Nanolab, as usual.

Greetings from Gent, Flanders, Belgium,
Fred.

TOPGUN: Canon 1014 and E64T

Post by aj »

Such a Topgun is certainly a nice find. Hope you did get it at a flea-market price.

Nice pictures of beautiful Gent (?) too. On a film with travel-experience too :) The world is a village.
Kind regards,

André

25 Euros, together with the 814 XL-S from the same original owner. So I have payed 50 Euros for both cameras. But there is some flickering visible with the 1014.. The flickering is not regular, there is no pattern. It happens every 100 frames or something. A few frames are darker then the other frames. I need to look at this. Otherwise the 1014 runs perfect. If someone can help here...

Yes, Gent it is.
On a film with travel-experience too :) The world is a village.
Sending unprocessed cartridges down to Australia is a risk of cource.. But they came back very fast.. Lets say 2-3 weeks. No X-ray damage or whatever. And Richard does a very good job.

Beautiful stills, Fred. Will you post a telecine?

I have the exact same camera (just refurbished by Du-all) and planned to shoot 64T last weekend, but Hurricane Bill mucked up my plans. Looks like Tropical Storm Danny is going to upset my filming plans this weekend as well.

WRT flickering, I just got back some Kodachrome shot with a 1014 XLS (also recently refurbished by Du-all) and towards the end of the roll I noticed some flickering. The rest of the footage was beautiful. As I was shooting a car show, and it was sunny, there was lots of specular reflection off the classic cars, so maybe this caused the flickering. I did not lock down the AE.

Hello, Fred
How do you think, is this 1014E better than the 1014 XL-S? :)

I have some technical clue about the flickering on XLS series. I'm not so sure to tell about it here but it's not the AE.

Thanks for posting. Fantastic images.

I'd love to hear about your technical clue. Either here or in private post.

nice, good find.

may i ask which flea market?

finding the local flea market has become my little bit of holiday that i take everytime i have to go somewhere to work.

i went to the flea martket in amsterdam recently, when i was there but it was just closing, and i didn't see anything that looked like it worked. except a grubby looking elmo and a dust filled lomo.

but recently i got a nice gossen cds exposure meter in budapest, which somewhat made up for the fact that i didn't manage to find a lomo developing tank, or a soviet 16mm camera which is what i'd been looking for.

tomorrow i get to go to my usual flea market in turin, where i havent been all summer due to work. there i found lots of great cameras alredy, a canon az814, a bolex b8vs double8, cosina 766, a fujica z600 single 8, all working great. and a few other less notable cams. and loads of other acessoies like movie lights, projectors, 8mm films etc.

never bought a thing from ebay yet!

Nice stills, nice camera! A friend at work gave me a Canon 814 AZ - very nice build on these models. Currently I am chasing down all things CANON CINE 8T so I am in need of the 25 and 75mm lenses (and the A-lens adapter). I plan to shoot some 100D on it.

I am waiting on my E64T results from Dwaynes from my vacation. Used the Eumig Nautica with no corrections...keeping fingers crossed.

Can't wait to see a youtube post of you film from those stills.

Cheers,
Mike

Fred.

I am presently on vacation in beautiful Hungary but your frameshots warrant a reply.

Prior to my trip I just completed "restoration" of 900 ft of 1970's standard 8mm Russian "Kodachrome" shot here in Hungary. The gentleman in question utilized a 1960's-70's Russian 8mm camera (battery operated).

Every shots' initial 2-3 frames were darker than the remaining sequence of frames. I have observed the same consistent phenomenon with my "younger" workhorse Nizo 156 XL Macro camera.

I suspect these camera's motors cannot ramp up to speed fast enough in the 1/24 to 1/60 sec required to "properly" expose across the entire sequence with your chosen settings, i.e. frame rate + aperture + shutter speed.

Cheers from Budapest.

Great find Fred and nice images with the 64T. 8)

I am quite fond of this camera, it was the first real camera that I owned in the heydays of super 8 and I made quite a few little films with it. The optics are superb, the useful variable shutter, that semi automated lap dissolve, the poetry like instant 54fps slow motion, what more could you ask for in a super 8 camera.
Truly a lengend and pinnacle of Japanese engineering.

I do not own a 1014 XL-S... But I have a 814 XL-S. The 1014E gives much better pictures then the 814 XL-S for sure.

Please let us know what you think about the flickering, Alex!

Here in Belgium, we have lots of local flea markets every weekend. The location is variable, in the summer it is often open doors.
