Okay, okay, I realize that not everybody will want to let the cat out of the bag, but...
I just finished editing a short feature that I had shot last year and started editing this summer (brief hiatus due to work). I am probably going to have the film transferred to video by Brodsky + Treadway up here in Massachusetts. But my! It's expensive.
I was wondering if any of you know of or have received any type of small filmmaker's grants? I did see one listed on http://www.flicker.org, but that one only applies to filmmakers in the Virginia area. Even small grants would be very helpful (due to recent non-work). ^_^
Thanks!

Filmmaker grants?

each state usually have somekind of grant (patriotic grant, community service, etc)
Check your local library for listing.
A lot of ethnic organizations also offer grants and scholarships - Irish American, Asian American, etc.
Traded organizations (aka local unions) also offer the same thing to members and immediate family members - plumbers, carpenters, etc.
Most are not for aspiring filmmakers , but I am sure you can make your application fit the requirements ;)
FYI - the application process usually takes a long time.

The Film Arts Foundation (http://www.filmarts.org) publishes a monthly magazine, "Release Print". In the back there is a rather large listing of available grants.
transferring
how much does the film transfer cost???? I don't have that many problems - it's something about 1$ per minute of film in my city (poznan, Poland
)))) -thats transffering from 8,s8,16 and some other formats to VHS ....is that expensive in the US???

Re: transferring
In the US, to do a rank telecine of 16mm it costs usually a minimum of $150/hr, and to do a rank of Super8 it costs about $225/hr. Consider that a color-corrected transfer usually takes so much time that you can get (at best) 20 minutes of footage transferred in one hour of telecine time. That means that those 20 minutes end up costing about $7 to $12 each, a bit higher than your $1 per minute... of course, film chains and DV8 transfer are cheaper, Roger's DV8 transfer is more like $6 per minute. What type of transfer can you get for $1 per minute? Is it a film chain, or a Rank, or what?bajer wrote:how much does the film transfer cost???? Well, I live in Massachusetts, and there's a duo named Brodsky and Treadway that do very wonderful work up here. Supervised and unsupervised are billed at the same rate - about $300 an hour (!) to digi Beta.
From what I've had quoted, most places in the US will do unsupervised Rank transfers to digital video for $200 to $300 USD per hour, although I've heard wildly divergent reports of (dis)satisfaction with unsupervised transfers.
Brodsky and Treadway do not use Rank - they use a totally customized film chain rig that they developed. (These are the same people, btw, that publish the "Little Film Notebook" - check out http://www.littlefilm.org).
A dollar a minute sounds incredible! Do you guys have a lot of people shooting small-film in Poland?

well...
I'm not familiar with the transfer techniques but I use transferring from s8 directly to DV files - the burn it to cd for me for about 1,2$ per minute and I add sth about 2$ for burning the cd
)) - the files have very good quality and they are a good choice for me because I use a dv camera for filming - and a s8 camera for additional scenes - last week I payed sth about 8$ for developing two b&w s8 cartridges and 10$ for transfering them into DV files - that gave me a few additional (cool looking) scenes to my new small film
- Polish small movies festivals are quite nice - you can even use videocd's , divx cd's or other mpegs on cd's for projection of your movie on almost every Polish film competition....thats cool for me - editing is far more easier...
