New John Schwind Site (Regular 8 Film)

Re: New John Schwind Site (Regular 8 Film)
As I mentioned earlier in the thread. I have used Mr Nowill's service and am extremely happy with the results. Using Bolex D8 cameras and M8 projectors the projected images are rock steady.

Okay but a difference of anywhere from 1-7 frames has been repeatedly proven to make zero difference in visible instability. Ranks, FlashScans, Bosch, etc all use a registration sensor that is even further offset than the industry standard for super 8 and they come out fine. As I previously mentioned, the Canon Scoopic has its claw about 5-7 frames off from the norm and it, too, is always steady as a rock when projected. While I agree it may be ideal to use the same sprocket hole for both shooting and display, in reality it makes no difference as long as the pitch of the sprocket holes is precision placed. Now if the pitch is not constant, then that is a different story.edwardnowill wrote:I disagree with Roger for the following reason.
I have never used your service and I wasn't disparaging your efforts in any way. I was merely stating the fact that if the sprocket holes are evenly spaced, then you will see no appreciable instability in the image when projected even if you use a different sprocket hole to project with than you shot with.edwardnowill wrote: I have gone to considerable efforts in my perforating efforts & do not wish

Almost all of my filming is reg-8. The gate/claw position is something I take for granted. When using a Bolex camera, I project with a Bolex projector. When using my Leicina camera, I project with the Leitz Cinovid projector. I try not to mix brands on the same film project. I have sent film to Edward Nowill on two ocasions for perforating 16mm film to cine standards. (And I plan to send him more). Upon projection, I see no difference between his film, and that which is perforated by Kodak. So that is my two bits worth.

My apologies to you Roger,I was reading an implication where none existed.
Cannon Scoopic Ds8-one of the best.I had a serious correspondant in Australia
who wanted me to manufacture Ds8 stock. I have done nothing about this so far
and have little knowledge about the needs of Ds8 users. It would be interesting to know whether the current range of stocks in Ds8 is satisfactory & if not what
would users like to have. How many Ds8 cinematographers are there out there?
The correspnodant was also thinking about supplying Ds8 cameras.I understand
that Aaton have bought out a new miniature 16mm camera selling at a surprisingly
modest price ( £2000 uk ? )so there are possibilities here but much depends on the
potential size of the market. The indications I receive from others in the trade
is that cinematography as it now is will continue for quite a while & that capital
expenditure is justified.I am sure many on this forum will have ideas although my
enthusiasm will remain with R8 because it is easier to manufacture in small quantities on a just in time basis.
My enjoyment of motion picture film rests on being able to interveen in every stage of the process to produce the desired result. Many of the film
makers I work with in this medium pull/push/stretch! things in ways I did not
think possible............So long..........E.N................

Re: New John Schwind Site (Regular 8 Film)
With reference to Marc's post ( february 1st 2009 )& others who requested me
(Edward Nowill ) to provide updates,I have now taken delivery of 2 new perforating machines & slitters. I can now manufacture regular 8mm film from
cut down 35mm perforated/unperforated film stock.
Picture steadiness issues with unmatched equipment are now a thing of the past.Film manufactured this way will be more expensive as there is more waste.
I listen to my critics, and thank my regular customers at the same time. Regrettably my flagship product ( fuji velvia 50asa regular 8mm ) is no longer available as fuji is refusing to sell the velvia 35mm unperforated film to Daniel Wittner.
If anybody is still reading this thread perhaps you could post your regular 8mm wish list & I'll see if I can manufacture it for you. perhaps you could indicate what price you are willing to pay for your chosen product.
Mr larry Pearce's super 8 perforators are now scrapped.Mr Cotto is not manufacturing so super 8 users are on their own now if they want greater variety of stocks than those currently available.

in response to your DS8 query, there are a few stocks available. Orwo Un54, Velvia, Foma R100 and E100d (as well as a few things from kahl film). Sounds like a lot. I have never used the Velvia in Ds8 for price reasons. The absense of colour neg in the range I think puts some potential users off the purchase of a ds8 camera. However in the absense of kodak making a neg available in ds8 as they have with 100d, and in the absense of kodak selling unperforated 16 or 35 stock, a ds8 neg cut out of new 35mm negative would be prohibitively expensive in my opinion. Lab stocks are an option, but for a colour neg addition, it would have to be re-cans to be affordable. I had believed Fuji were more flexible in regard to unperforated stock. That may no longer be so (or was the issue with supplying Mr Wittner with Velvia an issue Fuji had with that stock alone?). I'd like to see a colour neg in Ds8, but I doubt it can happen.
And so the format languishes. I can count the Ds8 rolls I have been sent for processing in the last few years on one had.
As for cameras, the cheapest new 16mm camera is the Ikonoskop at E5,500. They talked about making a run of Ds8 cameras but it didn't eventuate, due i believe to inadequate pre-sale interest. The Aaton a-minima would be closer to GBP20,000 than 2,000 I am afraid.
If you, or anyone, were to invest in Ds8 by making a Ds8 punch, that would be a fantastic thing to do. It would, however, not be servicing an existing market, but part of an attempt to generate a new one. Perhaps too it would be part of a world post kodak-perforated super 8. In the mean time, long live standard 8!

Re: New John Schwind Site (Regular 8 Film)
Actually, I think the minimum order was TEN thousand feet (as of 2003) to get DR8. And Kodak certainly isn't easy to deal with, even if you have this minimum order and the money for it up front.
It was like pulling teeth to find the right person and get a CAT NUMBER (how Kodak must do every sale for a custom order) for John Schwind and I to get a batch of K40A made in DR8 after Kodak discontinued K25.
He was complaining to me several years ago about how Kodak wouldn't make him any Plus-X, just Tri-X.
Of course, in hindsight, these two difficulties make perfect sense. Even in 2008, it wouldn't surprise me if Kodak had already pulled the plug on Plus-X film. . .

Re: New John Schwind Site (Regular 8 Film)
Well, at least there's one good thing since 03. The CAT numbers for both E100D and Tri-X in R8 are listed in the price catalog. Of course, they are listed as "finish-to-order", but you can still look them up easily.

Re: New John Schwind Site (Regular 8 Film)
I order film from kodak. In my opinion decisions to discontinue film stocks are made years in advance of the actual anouncement. I think the decision to discontinue Plus-x was made back when kodak made the switch to a new B/W processing formula. Tri-x got a make over, Plus-X did not. I believe the same for 64T. 100D was always going to be the only E6 reversal left when the dust settled. These are impressions I got from contacts at Kodak. They will never come out and say things outright but I always get the impression that something remains unsaid.
Regarding DS8: I have almost no sales of DS8. So, encouraging Mr. Nowill to produce DS8 may be a disservice to Mr. Nowill. He may spend a lot of time and money for a market that does not exist.

Re: New John Schwind Site (Regular 8 Film)
John, thanks for carrying DS8 film. I wish I could shoot more of it. As it is, it is the only kind of S-8mm film I ever shoot since I got my Bolex and Canon DS8 cameras. Where are all those guys who outbid me on many DS8 cameras on eBay? Do they use them as paperweights? What a shame... If you haven't shot DS8mm, you don't know what you are missing.
Re: New John Schwind Site (Regular 8 Film)
I think there is some merit to that concept, they would be smart to have a long term strategy for their offerings. But I feel the critical part of a decision to cancel a stock is whether they are selling enough stock to offset the unsold that expires in the warehouse.mr8mm wrote:I order film from kodak.
