Cartridge jamming

Post by Pj »

Hi

I have not really had any jamming issues before but recently I have experienced a few vision 200 cartridges jam. I am using a Nizo 6080, 561 and a Bauer 715XL and they all seem to have this problem, they have worked fine in the past. What can I do? Why do Super 8 cartridges jam?

Thanks
P

Very problematic to talk about the most common problem of S8 carts :)

Film tension inside changes from cart to cart. If you never had this problem in the past it happens now. Vision 2 is very hard stock for many S8 cameras.

I use Ektachrome 64T and it is flawless!
Pull that old movie camera out of the closet! I'm sure it's hungry for some film!

Yeah me too, I just wish 64T looked better... Color is lacking IMHO.

BTW - If this starts a 64T color flame fest, count me out.

I've had more jams lately than previously.

The trick I use it to take the cart out and turn the spindle myself until it pops/releases the tension. This works all the time for me.

I use a canon 1014XL-S and a Nikon R10. They're both good motors for negative stocks.. not sure about your camera.

OK, It appears there are two threads going for this topic so I'll move my comment over here:

I've had an increasing problem with jamming carts. I was blaming it on my Canon 814 AZ but I got another 814 and that one's doing it too.

Both Tri-X and 64T

You turn it clockwise or Counter clockwise?

metaT8,

Normally I do a clean, lube, adjust on my cameras before I use them but ended up being too excited about my 814 AZ to wait to shoot film with it. What a mistake, I had the same issues with my 814 that you're having. Real bad jamming.

From experience, I can say that the 814 is a super easy camera to disassemble for CLA. There is also a clutch that controls slip on the film drive wheel that can be tightened with the turn of a screw. My 814 film advance wheel turns real strong now and I have no issues with jamming anymore. Overall, the 814 is a great camera from all aspects to include servicing.

Take a look at the Pro8mm camera lineup they have. It includes the 814 I'm sure because of how easy it is to adjust clutch that controls the film advance tension.

I honestly cant recall. I never force it too much, so you shouldn't be putting large amounts of torque on it... just spin it till it clicks.

BTW, the turning till it "pops" or "releases" tension seems to be specific to 64T in my experience. This loosens the cart.

I had a roll of Vision3 do this last week (in my 1014XL-S), which was totally random. I did the turn till it popped and it was fine too.

I had a roll of V2 200T back from November that got fully jammed. The trick I used was to take scissors open about 1/2 an inch and use it as a tool to turn the spindle until the film actually moved about and inch. That got rid of the jam.

If I'm paying 15 bucks a cart I'm gonna get it to work.

understand pre batch '311' 64t was not lubricated, certainly caused jumpy images, batch ' 311' onwards should transport ok....
