Latest film technology in Super8 format, just mind boggling! I was talking to someone recently who couldn't believe that Super8 was still alive, not only alive but on the cutting edge. Just amazing.

That really incredible - yes the latest technology in a sup;er 8 cart...all those guys in the 80s who said super 8 is dead must be quite upset about this!!!

I really want to go the negative route but then I have to spend $$$ transferring to digital and that sort of negates having a workprinter. But the results would be amazing, no doubt.

Cheers,
Mike

PS - what's the low buck expectation to transfer say 4 rolls and get a decent digital AVI file returned to you? In the USA...

What's the main difference between vision2 and vision3 500t? Is it something in the color or contrast they change? What is it?

From Kodak's site:

Less grain in low light. Advanced Dye Layering Technology (DLT) delivers reduced grain in shadows and higher signal-to-noise ratios when scanning low-light scenes.

Extended highlight latitude. Gives you greater flexibility when lighting extreme situations, and lets you pull even more detail out of highlights.

Now you're going to have to post some clips when you shoot some of this stock.

I am ordering 10 rolls of the 500T - plan to use it in my GAF ST1002...I'll attempt to the the transfer myself on one roll to see if I can do it with my WP and the Canon GL2

What are your impressions of the ST1002? Have you used it with 500 ASA negative before? I have the ST1000 and was wondering what your experience might be with the use of its "500ASA Switch" and this stock. Many thanks.

It will be its maiden cart - the camera is like new but always got looked over and other cameras were used...but this camera should be very cool. I did not notice a 500ASA "switch" - it does have a stepped ASA feeler and it states its ASA steps as 640/400 on the cart backplate. Is there somewhere else I should be looking. I will put up a summary of the camera on my website in the near future. Do you have a pick of your 1000? Would be curious on the difference. If I recall correctly, yours has the loop handle (you hold the camera with your palm up) whereas mine has the pistol grip (palm forward).

Cheers,
Mike

Hey Mike:
Here are some links to the pics of this camera. I thought it might be similiar because of the model names. The "Ultra Fast Switch" was made for a B&W stock GAF sold at the time. From what I can see it throws the daylight filter in place and the documentation says it internally engages a resistor to set the ASA to 500...so long as the "speed feeler" as they call it senses a 250 ASA cart.

In my testing on 500 V2 I've found with the swich on the blacks are more pronounced but the overall images are grainier, whereas with it off they're slightly more exposed and the grains are more diminished. The better shots were indoors with existing light or partial sunshine, whereas direct sun such as the beach were slightly overexposed.

Good luck with your testing and telecining. I know that common knowledge states a negative cannot be projected or telecined via devices such as the Workprinter, but I figured what's there to lose in trying? Look forward to hearing how it goes.

Thanks,
Art

OK, now I see...On your camera, the feeler gauge covers from 16/25 - 25/40 - 40/64 - 64/100 - 100/160 - 160/250...

On my camera (the GAF ST/1002), the inside plate says: 25/40 through 400/640. I can only surmise that they added that switch on your camera to register the final 400/640 meter reading...in general giving your camera one extra ASA setting (the low 16/25 reading).

Very cool - thanks for the posting of the parts of the book - if you are able to post more, I would love to download it. (I am saving every page so perhaps you already did...thanks in advance for everything!!!

Thanks Art!

Cheers,
Mike

I remember that, Art-- you had them posted somewhere. I thought the ASA 250 without the special switch looked better than the "accurate" ASA 500 setting. That negative film seems to respond well to overexposure.

If you're stateside I'd try cinelicious.tv. Good post-house that's doing over-sampling on an ursa with great HD results. It's about 1/2 the price of most places. About $250 an hour with color correction, pan-scan etc.

I'm sending rolls to them next week. I'd be happy to post results.

Hi;

Adam I'd be really interested in your thoughts on Cinelicious transfers if you get the time, they look attractive for neg transfers direct to hard drive (even if you reside in the UK)!

Yes, Jim I remember that post. I have heard that in general a negative stock exposed at it's exact ASA tends to come out on the dark side whereas overexposed will render a better image. My testing seemed to support that but not conclusively, since both images were more than viewable and my "testing" was hardly scientific or controlled in any way.

I just did some filming with Pro8 160T and am wondering how it will turn out since it should have rated at it's exact exposure setting (using the Canon 1014 Electronic).

Rachel: I'll be sure to post. They did a transfer for me a while back, when they were first getting started. There were some honest mistakes they made with all the new hardware. They should have all the kinks worked out by now. They offered me a discount on the next scan, which I though was very cool. They're great guys to work with. AND, you can watch your transfer being done on a compressed live connection. It helps for pan-scan to wide-screen. VERY groovy.

My biggest thing is getting the grain definition. That is SO crucial to me. I'm keeping a very close eye on it for this round.
