Re: Exotic Super-8 film from Northkorea
When "North Korea" is mentioned, I always remember this post.
A colleague is travelling to North Korea ( Pyongyang ) next week. I have specifically asked him to look in the stores for super 8 film, or any "films" that's North Korean made.
All will be revealed...

About the process, I bet that it might be a svema/orwochrome/gevachrome. If one have any contact with the guy that has the film. And if he has shot something, maybe it would be a good idea to roll the shot film into a spool and send stripes of it for someone to test. There would be no problem in removing the film from the cartridge as I believe that anyone that would process it would do it in a spiral or something. The kick industrialisation of north korea happen soon after the war with the aid of the soviets. It's very likely that they would have used a technology similar to Svema for it.
I dunno if you appreciate the archeological importance of it, the Soviet Empire is now history, like the Inca Empire and this film is a historical asset.
Anyway, if you want to send me a 30cm stripe of shot film, i'd try the orwochrome chem for u. Just remember that the film has to be rerolled in a dark room or bag

Re: Exotic Super-8 film from Northkorea
Remember that if you do happen to find some of this film, you can't bring it into the U.S. unless you get a previous approval letter (good luck) or you shoot it all up first:
*The importation of merchandise from North Korea requires a letter of approval issued by the OFAC.
You may, however, may bring in information and informational materialsâ€â€books, magazines, films, posters, photographs, microfilms, tapes, CDs, records, works of art, etc. Blank tapes and blank CDs are not informational materials.

Hello - and good luck with the hunt for slow film stock from old-fashioned parts of the world. Kodachrome, in Std8, is drying up rapidly, on ebaY. It would be good to use some 'second world' stuff. 100 ASA is a bit fast for these old cameras!

How dumb is that (forbid products from north korea)... i know, maybe they hide a micronuclear bomb that will activate a goldeneye satellite orbiting mars... but hey, there is always capitain america, james bond and superman to protect justice, freedom and the american way... soon it'll be a duty of every northamerican to go through regular cavity checks in the name of the war on terror, on communism, on egalitarian societies (i am not referring to northkorea), anarchism, real democracies, fairtrade (not freetrade) and super8 cartridges.

and even dumber is to respect this idiocy... one should love the nuances of legality, as Malcom X said... the genocide was legal (in the germany of the 40's)...

It's also illegal for a Yankee to go to Cuba...
What's your point.
If the film is there bring it back. No one will care.
Good Luck

I can't believe there are film stores in North Korea but even there are film shops I'm positive it is forbidden to buy as a foreigner.
It's not a market ecomomy the role of money is not a same like in western countries. But a good example to compare a communist (north) and a democratic system (south).

Or just put the cartridge in your camera and say that you brought it with you!
Also, they will have to x-ray your stomach to see if the North Koreans put some nanobots in your food!
The North Koreans don't allow picnic lunches coming off of the plane and Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are strictly prohibited in North Korea. Foreigners there have no choice but to eat the local food. This raises the risk of American's bringing back little spy transmitters in their intestinal tracts obtained from North Korean food!

Re: Exotic Super-8 film from Northkorea
If anyone finds this fabled film, it will be in a small shop open once in a blue moon, staffed by flying pigs, which stocks only North Korean Super 8 film, Rocking-Horse shit, hen's teeth, and ingots of unobtainium. Elvis will be employed as the Saturday boy.
Re: Exotic Super-8 film from Northkorea
Hi and let me tell you guys one story: in 1991 I was in Minsk/Belarus. Once I found one Photo Store and inside... real Eldorado! 2 x 8, DS8, Super 8 and 16 mm films - b&w and colour, low- and high speed, tungsten and daylight. Processing equipment and chemistry - whatever you want! I ordered many of diverse films, became a ticket and came to the cash desk to pay for it. But the woman at cash desk said, I have to show her a belarussian passport - without it I can buy nothing! So I asked some people (countrymen) in the store, if someone could buy this stuff for me, and I'll give him the money, even with some tip. Nobody agreed and I bought nothing.Superbus_ wrote:I can't believe there are film stores in North Korea but even there are film shops I'm positive it is forbidden to buy as a foreigner.

Then do like they did in Taiwan and buy wholesale quantities as a business. I would guess that it would be much cheaper than the Kodak super 8!Superbus_ wrote:I can't believe there are film stores in North Korea but even there are film shops I'm positive it is forbidden to buy as a foreigner.

O
This notice was from the Homeland Security web site. They're well aware of North Korean merchandise, and wouldn't be surprised if they already have this product in their database.
Better find a trash can before you get in there, because you'll never get it out. The only thing you'll be taking home is your name on their watch list.
