Duchess

Yesterday I saw Duchess here in L.A. IMHO this is a big-screen must-see however you must travel to catch it. I was knocked out by it on every level. At the very least it's an amazing example of the use of motion picture film, to risk sounding like a Kodak lobbyist if there is such a thing. Seeing this it's hard to imagine digital technology replacing the film image. Enhancing it yes -- the movie used a DI which no doubt tweaked the imagery to perfection -- but I don't know, my feeling is film is here to stay. Atticus Finch said delete the adjectives and you have the facts, but in this case I can't. Here the film image is rich, subtle and stunning. After all we still use paper, right? BTW everything about this movie is first-rate besides cinematography -- performances, story, screenplay, costumes, editing, production design, the works. It's directed so well you forget about the period costumes and sets. Amazing. For its size Knightley's bedroom is as slender and beautiful as she is.
