Sticky shutter? on Beaulieu 4008ZM

Post by Math »

A little while ago I found a Beaulieu 4008ZM for a nice price, and I couldn't pass up on the offer. I have a nice set of cameras, so it wasn't needed at all, so it was only now that I bought a charger and checked if it worked.

Sadly it doesn't, The electric zoom works, although noisier then on my 5008s.
But the shutter doesn't work as it should. When I remove the lens I can see the shutter move, but very very slow (About a frame every 4 to 6 seconds). Sometimes it is stuck, but continues moving when I change the shutter angle.

What might be causing this, and any suggestions on fixing it? It seems like it needs lubrication, but I have no idea how. I currently do not really have the funds to send it to Bjorn, sadly.

-Could be that your battery is very poor condition.
-Possibly the circuitry has gone astray due to broken components
-Or the grease has become extremly stiff and hampers operation.

Most likely the battery.

Still, when in USA you can also send it to http://www.super16inc.com.
Much better on the wallet and skilled professional.
Kind regards,

The situation I described is when I have the camera hooked up to the charger ( Ansmann AC48), without charging the battery. The charger seemed to work as an AC adapter on my 5008s (It is directly able to run when the charger is hooked up to it), so I thought it was the same on the 4008ZM. Is this not correct? Otherwise it might indeed be the battery. I'm from the Netherlands.

It is a bit strange that you can run a camera off a charger as these supply limited current. Apparently it suffices.

On a 5008 you use a hollow cylinder type plug at the back of the base.

On a 4008 you should use a 3,5mm jack. Same voltage and + on the tip. I do not think it can run without the battery.

For general maintenance on classic Beaulieu try http://www.de-snek.nl

And check your personal messages :)

That's exactly what I'm doing. But maybe you're right, and it's the low supply that doesn't get it running like it should.

What costs can I expect from de Snek?

You are not supposed to run the camera off the charger (in other words use the charger as a power adaptor) with the 4008zm.

You need to use battery power. If the battery is dead you could make your own pack. I have posted pictures of my home made beaulieu battery pack here.

If you are ever looking into getting it serviced I would recomend Bjorn Andersson, he did a great job on mine. I believe he can recell the battery too.

Good luck with the camera.
Chris.

...If you want to sell it, contact me please.

Chances are very high that it just needs to be serviced. I bought mine with a sticky shutter - sent it to Bjorn and have since shot thousands of feet through it.
I'll need to send it in for servicing again before too long.

If you bought it cheap take the leap and get it serviced. It's worth it if you plan to shoot with it a lot.

Thank you for your replies, I will most likely have it serviced, I'm not looking to sell it, but when I do, I'll give you a mail.
