my velvia test to watch....

Post by O. Knights »

Hi, I've put up a small version of a wittner velvia test I did recently here http://www.vimeo.com/1531073 with examples of skin tone. Hope it's helpful to anyone wondering about this stock....

Wonderfull film. Funny kids!

Everything looked great. I think I will be shooting Velvia next time. Skin tones looked very good to me.

GO VELVIA!!!

Do you guys think that if a lot of us start buying velvia, fuji will start selling it themselves? I mean directly? I love the fact that

wittner and others buy film from Fuji (supporting the continuation of velvia)

then filmotec cuts and perfs it (supporting filmotec and the unbelivably beautiful orwo BW)

nd we keep getting stuff from wittner... a fantastic shop!

this is capitalist utopia...

Hi yes great skin tones.
For my eyes looks more like Kodak 100D than velvia, did you do some color correction?

Wow, the color rendition of your Velvia footage is gorgeous.

I gather the reliablity of Wittner Super 8 Velvia cartridges is superior to Velvia loaded cartridges by U.S. based suppliers.

Absolutely lovely! I really love that stock. What camera did you shoot that on? I shot some Velvia on my Canon 814 AZ and it jittered, which I understand is a problem inherent with that stock due to it's thickness. Yours was very stable, I watched it twice, once looking at the contrast and color (BTW I like your shooting style, nice follow shot with bubbles) and then checking the frameline, as I could see it in the upper part of the screen. It looked pretty steady. I was surprised, I assume that you did no post stabilization?

Nice footage. I, too, think it looks more like 100D though. It has a 70's or earlier feel to it. The Velvia I shot looked more 80's.

I shot one roll of 100D, and there are simularities with this one in colour...... Let's wait till the man comes home from work, and we will get the answer :)

I hope it is Velvia though, because I want to shoot on single 8 in the future, and I really like this film.

Hi, thanks for the nice responses! Yes it certainly is Velvia from Wittner that I shot here and NOT 100D. I have shot a lot of 100D and although I agree it has some similarities I find the velvia much sharper and actually less red in the skin tones, all in all a better stock for my use. I transfered this on my WorkPrinter with a Canon XHA1 set up with a low con gamma etc, It's amazing how good the transfers can be, I also left the frame lines in so people could see that the stability is good/normal for this stock in super8, at least with my Leicina Special that is, I'm not so sure I will be using it with cameras that have struggled with stability in the past. I will soon upload some more examples from pro8/01 and 100D and velvia at a better quality.

Did you overexposed it a little? Maybe that could be the reason for the natural colours (not the typical oversaturated) and people think it's more like 100D...

I'd wish this film from Wittner to be cheaper, then I would have no doubt!

Hi, No I set it at the correct ASA, As I mentioned I usually transfer with a slightly lower contrast set up and cine gamma settings with my Canon XHA1 resulting in a slightly less contrasty/saturated look I think this may have something to do with the subtler colours. Also the typical British weather often softens up the hard summer light, on this day it was very hazy sunshine. I guess it's possible my Leicina's Light meter could be slightly over exposing my films but I've never had any reason to doubt it's accuracy which has always delivered great results.
