Home telecine, should I modify my projector?

Post by Chris-B »

I am having problems with a home Telecine with my new DV camera (Canon DV-300 PAL).
My projector synced up with my old Sony Hi8 but with the new DV one I keep getting a slight flicker. The slower the projector goes the less it flickers but it won't go slow enough to stop the flicker completely, although I have had it running as low as 10fps. The new DV camera has variable shutter speeds that I have tried it on every setting and even the different auto settings, 1/50 is the best. But it still flickers.

My projector has three shutter blades but the film only seems to advance with every 3rd blade pass. So the same blade moves the film each time. Would cutting the other blades off help or not, I don’t want to screw up my projector for no reason?

It's a nightmare my old Hi8 works so much better but I want the extra DV quality plus my analogue card in my PC isn't too good. All my transfers are done with PAL equipment.

Thanks,
Chris.

cutting away the 2 blades will help, but afterwards the projector isn´t usable anymore for projection! Wittner Kinotechnik is offering a variable shutter blade set 3-2 blades, that can be mounted in any projector.
I am also making transfers from time to time with a standard VHS-C video (PAL). For that reason, I am syncing my Elmo GS1200 to exactly 16,666 Hz or 25 Hz wiht a crystal unit. After doing some shift adjustments with the sync level knob (moving the blade position relative to the camera shutter), I have flicker free results.
