Best camera for long exposure time lapse?

I'm sure everyone will say the Nizo. Is that the only camera that can do a long exposure? Which model should I look into? Lastly, can it shoot the negative stocks? Thanks!

I had a rare little Kodak Super 8 Analyst camera.

It actually had a much broader range of time lapse than most cameras with the feature built in. Downside is that the lens was pretty crappy and the camera used lots of plastic parts.

Mine failed on the first long shoot I tried when a plastic gear broke, but the footage I got was fun.

If you can pick one up for less than $20 it might be worth having.

Bauers have this Automatic B feature too. I.e. the shutter is of all the time and closes only when the film is transported. The interval is set by timer or by light-level.

Type 512 is the most versatile.

Unfortuately they don't read 64T properly. Which is even 30 years after the deed still a disgrace for such expensive cameras.

You did say "Best" right? The Leicina Special with the timelapse remote. Or a converted Bolex H16 for DS8.

I have to agree with BK. If you want to stick with the Super 8 cartridge, the Leicina Special with the Schneider-Kreuznach 6-66mm f/1.8 Leicinamatic lens and ST-1 remote controller would be a great choice. Similarly, if you don't mind carrying the extra weight and are willing to forego cartridge-loading, a Bolex H8 RX4 DS8 with a Tobin TTL motor would form the foundation of a very versatile outfit.

Other TTL motors are available for the Bolex, too, including those made by the Aranda Group, AZ Spectrum, and Norris.

The Eumig 860 and 880 will do time lapse. Do you mean like an intervalometer, or a 'B' exposure? The Eumigs will do both.

When upgrading in quality you could also find the little spindle accessoire for the either the Beaulieu 4008 or 5008. Then you have same mechanism. But no automatic (light level based).

I had 2 bauer's with this feature crap out on me, as well as 2 Eumig's.
From my experiences with long exposure, I really liked Nizo cameras with "autom B." for this. Also, probably the best you'll find for the price.
Including the Nizo Pro, look for a 3 digit Nizo model that ends in a 1(ie. Nizo 801). Problem with cameras with this feature is that after 1 minute or so in very poor lighting conditions the sensors tend to "give up". I believe it's even stated in either the Bauer or Eumig manuals that they're capable of up to 1 min.
At least with the Nizo's, one can control it with the intervalometer and the shutter locked open. My Nizo Pro can do maximum intervals up to 1min 45 sec this way. I also have a PulsAR external intervalometer which can do maximum intervals of up to 1 hour. I wanted to use it with my Nizo for really long exposures(stars), But the functionality of the threaded cable release socket in the camera is shot as is the trigger. Now I'm using an electronic release to run the camera.

Although getting hard to find in good condition, the newer Bauer Royal series have all the features you could want. I have the 8e Makro and it's a great camera -- easy to hold, and can do just about everything. Mine has the Neovaron 7.5-60mm with macro to front of lens.

I like the Nizo... you don't have to only use the auto B, I got some really cool results of the night stars moving on 64T by using this table http://joeorman.shutterace.com/Moon/Exp ... light.html and setting my own exposure and interval. You will just need a watch to count the seconds and set your interval.

Autom B + Fireworks = Awesome!

I have done this 2 years in a row now and want to keep doing it for at least the next 10 years or so to make a super 8mm fireworks montage. I was even thinking it may make for a fun collaborative project if any people are interested we could get a cool project going of fireworks from around the world.

Back to the topic I love my Nizo 801 for this. Fast to setup and not a big piece of equipment to worry about. Especially on the 4th when you are having some drinks.

Oh yeah- a few years ago I shot some fireworks with the shutter open and interval dial turned all the way to 6fps, apeture at 1.8 with 64T. It looked great. You get a long exposure motion blur effect at 6fps with orange lever open... as opposed to the fast shutter look at 24fps.
