Velvia 50D as ASA 25
I've read in another forum that shooting the Fuji Velvia 50D as ASA 25 gives even better results, specially more natural skin tones. Someone assures that this stock is between the range of 25-35 ASA in fact.
Have you tried this? I was thinking of giving a try to the Fuji now that it's getting more and more available even for Regular 8 and I'm curious how to achieve the best results...

the spec sheet reads;

It means to set your meter to a 25 asa instead of 50 asa so the film will be slightly overexposed.
Going from 50 to 25 shouldn't be that big of a jump. Sounds like a good idea, the last Velvia 50 I shot did turn out a little dark, even in sunny areas... but since I shot it with a Canon 814az I thought it might have metered incorrectly anyway.

I'd say that is a big of a jump, 1 whole stop - maybe not for negative film but Velvia is a reversal film. In the 35mm still format I've known of people rating it at 40asa for allegedly better results, but I've always found it works best at it's rated speed.

Perhaps the Velvia isn't getting exposed properly in certain cameras anyway and that is what is causing people to adjust.
Nothing wrong with testing it, just make up some cards and write down the exposure settings and see what you get. Based on the exposure I've seen on my 814 I would give it a try at 25, 40 and 50 and see what you get.

Yes, I think I'll try at both speeds and compare results.
Thank you for your answers.

so manual adjustment is only possible on Beaulieu and Leicina cameras?
is it possible to alter a canon 814/1014xl-s to have manual asa adjustment?

Re: Velvia 50D as ASA 25
sk8, there are many ways to do this: By selecting a different ASA in the camera (not usual in S8 cameras), by letting the double of light reach the film (open 1 stop aperture or double exposing time).... but this are photography basics :o
Re: Velvia 50D as ASA 25
Hi,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velvia says: "The original Velvia is an ISO 50 film. However, many photographers manually set their cameras to an exposure index (EI) of 40 or 32 to over-expose it slightly (one or two thirds of a stop respectively) in order to yield less saturated colours and more shadow detail."
As you've already mentioned Super8-Kameras: There's no notch for 50 ASA in the Super8-Standard. Hence the cartridge will be notched as 40 ASA.

Re: Velvia 50D as ASA 25
I shot my first Velvia cartridge a rated ASA (50) and I didn't like it. Too much dark.
Shot at 40 , instead, the Velvia 50D is lovely! Perfect colors, no over-exposed, no grain, wonderful sharpness.
At least: on the first batch (two years ago old) of Cinevia the asa rated are 40-50.

Cartridges with Velvia are notched as 40 ASA. You can use exposure compensation dial on the Canon 814/1014XL-S and set auto exposure at 50 ASA. I think, that the best results can be received if you expose Velvia as 40 ASA. In 50 ASA it is a little dark.jpolzfuss wrote:How?S8 Booster wrote:Canon 8/1014 XLSs will set 50

i agree with exposing at 40asa. usually i under expose reversal, but velvia is a little different.
so, where do you find 8mm (stand-8mm/regular-8mm) Velvia?

If you are interested, you can buy Velvia 50 in Regular 8mm from Wittner Kinotechnik (http://www.wittner-cinetec.com/katalog/ ... _filmm.php)
