Quicktime file size for web sties?

Slightly OT, but I need to render some super 8 vids for a bands web page. This is my 1st time rendering something for a web page. I know there may be variables, but what's an optimal MB size file for a web page video download?

It should be 100MB or less.
A good bitrate will be between 1500kbps to 2000kbps (and use the h.264 codec).

I think it should be less than 50mb.

The fact is that in the USA we have slow connections for the most part. I know a lot of people that have only been on 256kbs DSL for a year. My 1.5mbs seems slow at times.

I usually try to keep it under 10mb per minute. If you do that, most connections should be able to stream it instantly. Try the bitrate at 1000 and keyframe every 60 using the h264. Then tweak it from there to your liking.

1000kbps is also a good bitrate, but are you sure about the key frame rate? (every 60 frames)

I think the more you have scene changes and the more camera movement you have the more keyframes you want. If you just have mostly locked shots then you won't need as many keyframes. I shoot action sports so I do mine that way cause my timeline is 30fps so that gives me a keyframe every 2 seconds.

Oh I see.

And what do you recommend for a video which has slow and fast actions? Is something in the middle like a keyframe every 30 frames will be fine?
(or the same as the fps of the video - 24/25/30, which means a keframe for every second)

Try 60 first then adjust from there. I have had really good luck with 60. Also if you are using compressor on a mac you can set it to automatic.

QT has so many variables it's hard to decide what to do.

- what compressor you use will give you different file sizes.

- What frame size you use will also affect this.

- what frame rate is another variable.

It is possible to make multiple movies of different sizes and have all of them on the site. There is HTML for having the browser download the right file depending on the person viewing it. I loaned out my Quick Time for the Web book, so do not have access to the info right now. Maybe you can check it out from your local library. It's worth a painful read to truly understand QT.

I was able to do 1MBps, but it's the small 320x240 or something. My next bigger choice is full screen uncompressed... or at least avi sized.

I find the best settings for the web are Quicktimes using the h.264 codec. H.264 holds colours much better than the others.

If you are doing it on a mac these are the settings I use (should be the same if you are using quicktime on a PC).

H.264 compressor
Keyframes set to Automatic
Data rate set to Automatic
Quality somewhere around medium is good, do a few tests at different levels depending on the content you can get away with more or less.
Select best quality multi pass rendering.

Tick prepare for internet streaming otherwise the video will not appear until fully downloaded.

If you have audio use the AAC Codec set to 44khz
