I guess one should avoid coffee or Red Bull before attempting this operation.

I have a 2nd busted S8L to practice on. It already has the covers off the sides so there is a lot more room to work. Removing the sides is not too difficult: remove the control side first. Be sure to make some sort of mark on the knobs so you get them back to the correct setting.
You have to remove the control side in order to get at the screws to the film side.

Also, with the side off it is a good time to clean all of the internal glass.

BTW: with the sides off you will notice that Nizo built this cam like a truck. The frame is massive.

ALL STOP on S8L!

Looks like the gate is the first part that was assembled at the factory. The two screws are accessible from the lens side which means everything has to be disassembled.
I think not!

Actually, once the sides are off, and the front panel, you're only two screws away from removing the entire front end chassis section, iris/motor, lens assembly and all. OTOH, are you sure the S8L gate isn't affixed with plastic rivets? I've seen that in the older simpler models.

Mitch, you may be correct. I have sharp tool at home. I'll see if I can scratch it as a test.

The $6000 Sony HD is looking better every day. (Joking of course)

Nothing wrong with cropping the footage, which you have to do with wide-gate shooting anyway since the frame lines will be visible, but by widening the gate first you get more emulsion and the grain is a little tighter after telecine.

Hello,

I want to file down the gate of my nizo in order to get the SD8 frame size too.
I went at a clockwork craftsman' to ask him to do this task with a perfect technic.
According to him it's not that difficult with his diamonds files and a bit of experience :)
His price is quite fair as he told me it will be nearly free

The only problem is that he would like to know the exact size of the new frame and want to know if he has to make a new bevel like on the other side of the cavity and if there is a need to paint it in black to finish properly the task.

Would you please give me the appopriate size of the new frame and give some precision about the paint & the bevel.

Will he has to file down the left side of the existing frame or the right hand size, according to the picture attached:

Front side:

Back side (with the evilish springs that runaway everytime I try to put the gate back at it's place  ...):

Thank you in advance for all your advices,

Best regards

Damian
