Help please, Specto Greyline Standard & General

Post by cinepat »

I am a UK resident 'newbie/oldie'and would appreciate any help to get me into the 21st. century.

In the 1950's I was a keen 8mm standard enthusiast. I now want to edit my old film before transferring it to CD, and will then pass on copies to grandchildren.

My old projecter bit the dust many years ago, and I have just acquired an e-Bay bargain(?) Specto Greyline Standard which actually works - but not 100 percent. I get a split picture - I cannot adjust the framing. There is apparently a bit missing from a threaded boss which projects forward above the lens (I guess this is the framing adjustment). Without dismantling the thing (and ending up with a box of bits!) it would seem to me that a rod to adjust the framing should run through the boss to the innnards. Any comments, please, before I wreck something? (Once I discover how it is supposed to work I can manufacture the necessary components)

Any comments on the Specto Greyline would be appreciated.

I would appreciate URL's of useful sites for UK suppliers. Where can I buy film cement? I live in the wilds of west Wales so an 'over the counter' purchase is unlikely. I may even go mad and buy film - my wind-up twin-turret camera still runs.

A general comment - bearing in mind the advance in digital cameras I was surprised to find such 8mm enthusiasm on the web.

I would be grateful for any comments.

Welcome Back!
Theres a lot of Standard 8 users out here-me included!
Your theory is quite right. If can,as you say, remanufacture the missing article, then you will be back in business. The Greyline was not rocket science.Simple but robust construction. As long as you are careful, you will do no damage.
Film Cement? Bags of it!
Try Bristol Cine Centre
Lees Cameras
Widescreen Centre London
7dayshop.om---they still supply it.Reels and oddments too!
Photworld,Llandudno--forStd8 100asa reversal film,its brilliant,fresh stock.
Dwaynes USA-still process Kodachrome
Standard8 film co.USA-they still sell it-fresh stock.
Hope this helps.

A welcome to cinepat from another (oldie) Welsh cine enthusiast!
I've not used a greyline but have a few standard Specto machines in various gauges (which I've acquired over years of attending cine fairs and from clients who bring their films for transfer and leave their projectors with me).

They all use the vertically threaded boss for framing. Maybe I could take one off a machine but I'm not sure it would fit the greyline.

Did you know that film cement can be bought at some of the Jessops stores?
In Wales standard 8 colour reversal daylight 100asa filmstock is available for about £26.00 per roll including processing from Roy Salmons of Photoworld, Llandudno LL30 1LQ. Roy unfortunately doesn't yet have a website.

You shouldnt have any problems in utilising those Specto parts-the only differences were cosmetic, intil they made a cheapo version that used on sprocket for pull down and take up,offset from the lens barrell. It wasnt very successful Im told.
Didnt jnow that about Jessps and film cement.
Photworld IS where I get my std8 filmstock from.Roy is a good bloke and a pleasure to deal with!
