Quick question

Post by The Seldon Plan »

Finally, finally trying out my super 8mm for the first time. Very quick question - the nizo 148 manual says that 18fps is "normal" speed - this can't be correct right? I thought 24fps was normal?

Cheers

Well everyones view of normality is a little different...and it all really depends on your age (?!), location in the world, what speeds your projector has, what you want to do with your film after development, 'artistic preferences' and for a whole lot of people, how big your budget is!!

Two and a half versus 3 minutes 20 at 18fps is quite a big financial deal to many. My advice would be to do lots of testing and camera familiarisation at 18fps...then when you want to burn your carts a bit faster, switch the switch!

18fps was considered to be the 'normal' speed because cameras without a selection of speeds almost always filmed at 18fps, though that situation changed a bit with the introduction of sound film. Being the most common speed 18fps = 'normal'.

18fps is standard for consumer formats, 24fps is standard for pro formats.
I may sound stupid, but I hide it well.

18fps is "normal" for S8 silent. 24fps is "normal" for sound films of just about any gauge.

The standard in Super8 is 18, so generally speaking in Super8 format, 18 fps is normal, its the speed every camera or projector runs. 24 is optional and "professional" and not all cameras or projectors can run at 24.
