Facts: It's real, the images are gorgeous and I can't wait to do my first S8 telecine with it.
By the way... no need for a computer to capture, the Workprinter's trigger out will interface directly to the RED ONE's GPI input to trigger capture in stop motion mode (up to 30 single frame captures per second at 4K). I requested the feature specifically for this purpose about 2 years ago almost as a joke and they threw it in the feature set.
I'm currently travelling but playing with several optical choices to bypass the condenser lens. I'll post something when I'm 100% happy with the outcome. Any suggestions?
In the meanwhile http://www.redrelay.net/ has some footage from actual users (most are *only* in HD resolution.)

a) You're a legend
b) You know you've crossed to the dark side with that camera
Seriously can't wait to see your results.
BTW I downloaded Peter Jackson's short shot with the Red (or a demo clip of it) and to be honest it looked just like video - only with a squillion pixels - I think the battle front on video now isn't going to be on pixel resolution but on gamma, colour depth, exposure lattitude and other chracteristics of the film look.

Read my science fiction novel The Forest of Life at https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D38AV4K
Look at the newer clips (and not promoted by RED itself) like those at at http://www.redrelay.com The Peter Jackson short was shot with a prototype camera way before the design was finalized.
I like film for some things and digital for others... I'm not in the "film is dead" murder party, after all they're just tools. However, let's face it, film is much more romantic and fun to shoot! This is coming from a guy that owns a RED camera.

The biggest issue you will have with lens choice is clearance of the chassis. You'll either need a long focal length, which is more susceptible to vibration, or a lens with a diameter of about 30mm or less to be able to crop and focus to an 8mm frame. The only other option is to mill out and modify the chassis to accept larger diameter lenses.
My friend might take a month or two but he's trying to make a setup with only high quality glass and using the fewest amount of elements possible. It might be an expensive blunder, we won't really know till we try.

Unfortunately, I don't think any of those listed will work. You need at least a 45 - 50mm focal length for a 1/3" CCD. The larger the CCD, the longer the focal length will need to be in order to focus and crop into an 8mm frame. You cannot get the lens any closer than 50mm to the gate on the GAF chassis, either with a small diameter lens or a larger one (with a modified chassis).

Worth a try, yes? Wish you luck on this project. Would love to see some results when you are ready.
Yeah, you're right I just posted that link because it's what we first started talking bbout basing our design on. We also looked at 35mm cinematography probe lenses from a couple manufacturers. Thats when we decided to custom build one.

Once again, I wish you good luck with this and would really like to see some samples when you have it set up and tweaked.
Great looking opportunity with kit of that quality, but what made you discount the idea of engineering an alternative lens mount (or waiting for RED to do the same) and then choosing from the multitude of fantastic glass already produced specifically for this type of (ie reproduction) work?
cool about picking up this digicam. a 4k scan of a super 8 frame is probably beyond overkill, but who knows - some experimentation may yield some new innovative techniques. Especially if you want to use CGI. Please keep us posted.
Can you tell us a bit more about your work flow with this camera? The sample footage on the Cooke S4 lenses is looking pretty choice to my eyes.

What exactly do you have in mind? I do want to bypass the condenser lens "sniping" directly from the gate.

I thought so too until I went to Chile over a year ago and saw Daniel's Super8 DI projected on 35. The only thing I can compare it to is the three dimensional brush strokes on an oil painting (with character) vs looking at a billboard.

Let me know what you end up with, I may want one myself.
