Where to buy 16mm filmstock?

Post by rhcvatni »

I've found some places, but i thought maybe you guys had some favourite suppliers you'd like to share with the rest of us. I like any place that's cheap and ships to Norway.

There is only one - DR RAWSTOCK!!!

Post by calgodot »

Dr. Rawstock

http://www.drrawstock.com

Factory sealed prices start at 30-cents per foot. Recans start at 22c, and short ends start at 11c.

IMHO ordering directly from Kodak or Fuji is fiscally irresponsible. Dr Rawstock claims filmmakers save an average of 45% by going to them. I can attest to similar savings with them on past projects.

Call them for up to the minute pricing and special deals.

The only problem with places like Dr. Rawstock is that you are rolling the dice with quality. Do you want to trust some guy that split a mag and recaned the film?? I don't.

I know people who used Dr Rawstock for years without any problems. They have legendary quality control over there. I myself have acquired film from them for projects that exceeded what was expected in both quality and price.

That said, my paranoia forces me to avoid short ends as if they were infected with SARS, and to use recans only when absolutely required - i.e. someone is being too cheap to buy new stock.

But I'd still order my factory-sealed stock from the Doctor. Their prices beat Kodak's *every* time.

And let's not pretend you're not tossing dice when it comes to Kodak. (Not here in the crowd that was devastated by jittery S8 carts.) They are the only company I've ever had to send film back to, and then fight for the refund or credit. I love their film, but I am no fan of the company.

(Let's keep mind we are talking personal experience here, too. I'm not saying you're wrong Nigel - just that my experience is different.)

I was spared the jittery S8--I missed those cartridges. When I said rolling the dice it was in referance to recans. If you are buying factory sealed cans that is one thing. You know from my past posts that I am the guy that will pay more for quality and safety. I have also been fortunate enough to work and become friends with people that have 501C status so I can add film to their orders and get great deals--factory direct.

thanks guys!

I won't be ordering anything but 100 foot daylight load spools, cause I'm not ever going to touch my 16mm film before it's Telecined by rank. That means Dr Rawstock is out of the question.

Nigel, Whats a 501c status?

I can answer...

501c is the "non profit" corporate status given by our beloved "IRS"...which means you don't pay taxes on your corporate income.

From Ebay.

I just won 6 pcs. of (250 ASA) Kodak negative (16 mm in 30 m reels) at price 25 Euro! I just wait that Atte will get the new battery for his Arriflex BL16!

The same guy offered me also 21 pcs. same nega-type (16 mm) at price 165 Euro, not bad!

I also won 14 pcs. outdated super 8 cartridges (5 Peruschrome, 8 Agfa moviechrome and one K40) at price 30 Euro.
Best Regards

Can the Fomapan B+W 16mm film mentioned by Herb be processed by any lab that does Kodak B+W? I assume it's reversal, yes? What are your thoughts on the look as compared to Plus/Tri X?? I like the price alot!

I just shot yesterday couple first tests with double super 8 version of same Fomapan R100 filmtype. We'll (= Jukkasil and Atte Tenkanen) try to process it ourselves during couple next weeks, so I'll comment our results very soon!

Fomapan has a jet black backing that must be removed in processing unlike Plus-X so, no, the processing is different. I sent my R8 Fomapan to Andec and was pleased. My web site has samples of R8 Fomapan on line if you want to look at some. Look in Field Work, Shooting, Regular8mm. There, each film has a page and clips. I'd like to shoot some 16mm Fomapan, but have too much other stock to get through first. Double perf is not available either and that is what my Bolex H16 wants.

John Schwind tells me he will get more double perf 16mm Fomapan in September. I only use a few rolls of it for an older Kodak Model E camera. My Bolex can take single perf. Fomapan is reversal.

I get my Fomapan processed at Franklin Labs and they do a good job of it. I'm thinking of using their sepia toning service with my next few rolls. They do only black and white and sell film stock as well. They have Super 8, Regular 8 and 16mm black and white reversal and negative stocks. I'm thinking of trying their Ilford negative next. They recently added processing and printing of 35mm black and white movie film.
