when the 85 filter is swung out the way in the 4008 by means of the filter key, the 85 filter is replaced with another clear filter in order to obtain perfect backfocus. The backfocus of the lens was adjusted to the film plane with the filter in situ. By removing the filter, then something has been taken away, altering the distance between the rear element of the lens and film plane. If the filter has been removed you will get slightly softer images when the lens is wide open, also pulling back on the zoom to the wider setting at a wide aperature, again you'll loose focus.
Look at the cameras that have the inbuilt 85 filter which give the sharpest images when the iris is wide open, leicina special, beaulieu 4008/5008, zeiss ms8, these camera all have two filters, when the 85 is swung out the way, it is replaced by a clear filter, thus maintaining perfect back focus.
Thanks booster for posting that link, i've just posted my answer and you beat me to it, better explained answer/link too.

You'll pull more chicks with an old 4008 than you'll ever do with any old super8 camera. That is important to know.
The handle is not the most comfortble to hold, but you'll get used to it. There is a tripod mount on the bottom of it, and you can attach another handle form a camera to it or something else to make it better to hold.

won a design price in 65.

Probably true, but I've found using a really small c-mount lens gives this camera a 2nd life as a more portable, lighter camera. This weekend I used this Pentax cctv lens extensively.super8man wrote:With all the theoretical talk about interchangeable lenses on the 4008, in reality (or statistically) I would dare to suggest that MOST people never acquire a second lens. Then, once they do, they rarely use it. Just a thought (or my opinion).

It's very wide (6mm) and works in low light (f1.2!) and I really don't have to worry about focusing unless the subject is closer than 2 feet.
I'm sure this lens doesn't compare quality-wise with the Schneider 6-66 I also have, but it makes it much easier and more fun to use for family shots.
If you pickup a 4008, I would instantly pack it up and send it to Bjorn. Yes, it isn't cheap but he can put it back to factory specs (or better!) and you'll know that you didn't (or did) get ripped off. He can certainly re-cell your battery or sell you a new one. Stay away from the external packs, IMO they are more trouble than they're worth.

I completely agree - they are a pain.Stay away from the external packs, IMO they are more trouble than they're worth.
Hey, whatever you do, do NOT be tempted to put your 4008 on this:

Way too heavy...as is the Leicina on the stand in the picture!
I just had to one-up Booster's camera photo!
Cheers,
Mike
