Is anybody who posts here living in Vancouver. We're emigrating there in a few weeks and would like to know what the scene is like. Can you buy K40/Tri-X from Kodak Canada as cheaply as Kodak US?
ps. to Bart Sanders, thanks for the cameras! Haven't filmed yet with the Bauer, but the Nizo came out great in Venice, although sometimes I was a little optimistic with how little light you could film with Tri-X. I think it's time I got a lightmeter
Yea, I wanna know too! I'm planning a trip towards the end of the year and would be good to know where are the best places to get stuff............ If I could find some good projectors, I'd handcarry a few back home.......... haha.
Use to live and work there. Dunno what the latest scene is right now but there are festivals and cinemas that show indie films. Super 8 ( or anything else for that matter ) is cheaper south of the border.
For equipment and stuff look in yard sales, flea markets, Value village ( a chain store selling used goods) Pawn shops at Hastings street ,Granville street and New Westminster. Last time when I was there on a visit a few years ago I picked up quite a few cameras and a Elmo sound projector. Don't forget to visit Leo's cameras on Granville. They have Beaulieus and Bolexes for sale at reasonable prices.
Bring lots of K40 with you Ed, you are going to run out. An anamorphic lens would be useful for those panoramic vistas.
Up until a few years ago, Vancouver's film production industry was greater than that of Toronto. Since then, the tables have turned for Toronto's benefit. None the less, because Vancouver did so well in the industry, I would imagine that the availability of film stocks at Kodak's headcourters there are pretty good. I have no trouble at all aquiring any film stock and format here in Toronto.

For K40, London Drugs is about $29 CDN and Kodak is about $24. The Kodak office is not really a store, but a shipping/receiving outlet in the studio area of Burnaby. You call your order in beforehand to the national office, and can usually have it available for pickup the same day. London Drugs usually doesn't have a lot of film in stock, so if you're looking for a bunch of film go to Kodak. You can also get film at Leo's and Kerrisdale camera.
The Kodak mailer address in Canada is in Toronto, so that additional shipping charge makes the film more expensive.
I think Leo's is the only place to get double 8 film, but I could be wrong.
I've asked a couple of Walmarts if they do Super 8 processing, but they didn't know what I was talking about, so I'm guessing that's a US only thing.
As for Toronto or Vancouver being bigger production wise... Toronto was likely bigger last year, but I'd be surprised if it is this year. There is a ridiculous amount of production going on this summer (currently about 8 huge features).
The indie community here is really tight and supportive. There is a lot of support for indie productions from the equipment houses and major production folk as well. It's a great film town, and a great city in general.
