appleseed lake?

Post by mattias »

anybody seen appleseed lake yet? since matt pacini refuses to make a pal version of lost tribes, scot not having finished his, josh polonski is nowhere to be found, i guess this is my chance to actually see a recent super-8 feature. just wondering if the image quality makes buying it worthwhile. seems a bit expensive for a video cd, especially if you hardly have enough to eat, like me... ;-)

I would be willing to make a VCD or Divx of Lost Tribes for you with matt pacini's permission. I actually have an NTSC VHS copy of it sitting here that I havent watched yet.

I would be interested too ! I wanted to by the Pacini's feature but NTSC would be too difficult for me to read. But wouldn't be better to ask Matt if he or someone else could do DIVX or VCD from original video master ?

Lost Tribes

Post by double-wide »

Greetings,

I purchased a copy of Lost Tribes, and I have watched it a few times. Since the creative aspect of any movie is subjective, I will only comment on the technical aspects. These are my honest observations:

Most of the interior scenes look like low grade home video: very grainy(looks more like video noise) and askewed, unnatural colors. Is is obvious that no suplimental lighting was used, only the available lighting, which appears to be from mixed sources most of the time.

Only a few exterior scenes display the correct exposure. Most of the scenes are over exposed (highlights totally washed out) or under exposed (to dark to see details). This clearly illustrates the limited latitude of the film used.

There are many scenes with distracting scratches in the film, and black blotches.

Many scenes contain jitter, so much infact that it forced an edit at that point, which seemed like an unnatural cut.

Some shots lack proper focus. I assume this may be due to using low available light, resulting in a very limited depth of field.

The sound is rather good as far as I was concerned.

All that said, there are a few shots that are correctly focused and exposed, and I am very impressed with the super 8 at that point.
I truly believe that properly exposed and focused Kodachrome cannot be distinguished from 16mm, or even 35mm as far as video transfers are concerned.

All and all, I tip my hat to Matt. He actually finished a feature length movie on super 8. Bravo! (clap! clap! clap!). By the way, excelent job with the music.

One last note: It is obvious that Matt has potential as a moviemaker. Good luck, Matt.

Hey, Matt, I laugh every time I hear "Thanks, I can buy a popsicle, dickhead." I love that line.

Regards,

Al

probably, but if he doesnt want to bother then I wouldnt mind doing it, I have a high quality consumer SVHS deck and a good analog video capture card, so just need to make sure I have enough free harddrive space. I just emailed him, I will let you know what he says.

Well I talked to Matt Pacini, he said that I could make a couple of CD copies if I sent him a copy, But he also said that he does now have some PAL copies, so that might make it unnecesary.
